James Raymond Ferguson, affectionately known as J.R., passed away peacefully on December 8, 2025, in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, at the age of 82. Throughout the day, he was surrounded by loved ones, including his devoted wife, Jayne, and many of his grown children.
Born on July 9, 1943, in Lowell, Massachusetts, to James Cecil Ferguson and Jean Dizoglio, J.R. lived a life marked by dedication—to his country, his craft, his faith, and his family. His early years were shaped by service; at just 17 years old, he joined the United States Navy in 1960. As a proud member of Construction Battalion MCB-7, J.R. traveled the world during his service until 1963. He contributed to vital projects including airstrips, housing facilities, gymnasiums, and official buildings in locations such as Guantánamo Bay, Cuba; Puerto Rico; Davisville, Rhode Island; and Spain. In July 1963, MCB-7 was honored with the Battle Efficiency “E” award for excellence in the Atlantic Fleet—a testament to the caliber of work J.R. helped deliver.
Following his military service, J.R. embarked on a lifelong career as a contractor beginning in 1965. Over the course of five decades, he built and remodeled countless homes across Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine. His work extended beyond residences—he also constructed numerous churches throughout the region. His passion for building was not just professional, but deeply personal. One of his proudest accomplishments was the home he built in Kittery, Maine—a place he shared for 22 cherished years with his beloved wife. It wasn’t just a house; it was their sanctuary and a reflection of their shared dreams.
J.R.’s love for construction became a family legacy when his son Michael Ferguson joined him in the business. Together they worked side by side for 20 years, continuing JR’s tradition of craftsmanship and integrity.
In pursuit of spiritual growth and service to others, J.R. earned an associate degree in theology and religious vocations from Victory Bible School between 1994 and 1996. He later became a pastor and led his own church in York, Maine from 1996 to 2000. His faith was central to his life—he read the Bible daily and found joy in sharing its teachings with others.
J.R.’s life was rich with hobbies that reflected his zest for living. He had a deep love for motorcycles and spent many memorable days riding across the country with friends. He enjoyed winemaking and coin collecting and took great pleasure in painting—especially Dutch pour techniques that resulted in stunning pieces admired by many. A skilled pool player, he participated in league play for years. He also found peace walking trails with his dog through their Kittery neighborhood where he greeted neighbors with warmth and kindness.
He loved traveling with his wife and exploring new places together. Whether tending to their yard or simply enjoying time with family and friends, J.R. approached every moment with enthusiasm and generosity. He had an innate desire to share what he loved so others could experience it too.
J.R.’s legacy lives on through his children: Bonnie Cole of Plymouth, Massachusetts; James Ferguson of Orange, Massachusetts; Janis Ferguson of Sanford, Maine; Tracy Ferguson of Laconia, New Hampshire; James Ferguson of Pelham, New Hampshire; Michael Ferguson of Kittery, Maine; Rob Drakoulakos of Nashua, New Hampshire; Vanessa Fellman of Stratham, New Hampshire; Jennifer Cosco of Stratham, New Hampshire; and Eric DeLong of Stratham, New Hampshire. Also 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A man of deep compassion and unwavering faith, J.R. touched countless lives through his work, ministry, friendship, and love. He faced illness with grace and resilience—never complaining—and remained positive through every challenge. His presence brought laughter and comfort to those around him. Above all else, he loved God with all his heart and lived to share that love with others.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire all who were blessed by his remarkable life.
