James Marvin Greer, 96, passed away on May 7, 2023 in Exeter, NH. James was born to Jacquelyn Stocking Greer and James Emery Greer in Providence, Rhode Island on April 14, 1927. His father pastored churches in Bristol, RI and Hull, MA, later becoming pastor of the UMC in Little Compton, RI. “Jimmy” attended the local public schools in Little Compton, where he was a newspaper boy during these early years. Jim had fond memories of visiting his “Mammy” and “Diddy” Stocking at their camp in Simsbury, CT, where they retired after Reverend Stocking's years as a Methodist circuit rider. James went on to the Mount Hermon School in Massachusetts, where he graduated in the spring of 1944. With his father's aid, James matriculated at his parents' alma mater, Boston University, where he was admitted into a five-year Business/Law program. In 1946 James was drafted into the Army. He served a tour in Seoul, Korea, arriving on one of the first “Victory ships” from Seattle to Seoul. Returning Stateside, James completed his BS in Business Administration and began law school at Boston University.
On a bus from the Berkshires to Boston, James met the love of his life, Marjorie Haynes Harwood. The two were married in Belmont, MA at the Payson Park Church on April 7, 1951. Together they raised 4 children: Cynthia Greer Broin (Martin), James Edward Greer (Mary Jane), David Alan Greer (Rex), and Julie Anne Kelly (James). The couple resided in Concord, MA, Nottingham, NH, and Naples, FL. Jim and Midge had five grandchildren and two great-children. The couple had been married 62 years when Midge passed away at age 90 on February 27, 2014.
Jim was active in the men's tennis team at TriCon Church in Concord, making lifelong friends (one of whom was killed on 9/11). He continued his tennis playing in retirement in Florida, adding golf to his repertoire.
Jim worked for Raytheon Company in Waltham, MA as an accountant, from 2/16/51 until his retirement in 1989. Following retirement, Jim drove the senior bus in Concord, and with Midge began planning and building their dream home in New Hampshire. During this time Jim and Midge also purchased property in Naples, FL. Together they enjoyed visiting friends in Florida from old Belmont days, as well as entertaining Concord and NH friends and family.
