James Joseph McGovern, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away on December 16, 2025, at the age of 90. He is remembered as a man of high energy, curiosity, and service to others. He possessed a remarkable ability to make friends wherever he went and genuinely enjoyed striking up conversations with people from every walk of life. Jim had an incredible ability to make people feel welcome wherever he was.
Jim was born on March 26, 1935, in Franklin, New Jersey. After the death of his father when he was just nine years old, Jim was raised by his mother, with the loving support of his Aunt Mary and Uncle Lou Marvin, who became like second parents. Growing up in the close-knit mining town of Franklin, he enjoyed sports, school dances, and friendships that lasted throughout his life.
After graduating from Franklin High School in 1953, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy during the final weeks of the Korean War. Following recruit training, he volunteered for submarine duty and served four years as a radioman. The technical skills and love of radio communications he developed in the Navy remained with him for the rest of his life and eventually led to his passion for amateur radio.
In June 1957, Jim married Frances Carnegie of Totowa Boro, New Jersey. Together they shared sixty years of marriage, building a life centered around family. They first lived at Lindy's Lake in West Milford before settling in Oak Ridge, New Jersey, where Jim built the family home in which they raised their son, James, and daughter, Marianne. Fran attended nursing school before choosing to leave her studies to marry Jim and begin their life together. She passed away in 2017 after complications of Parkinson's disease.
Jim spent his career as an electrician and was a proud lifelong member of IBEW Local 102. While supporting his family through his trade, he devoted countless hours to serving his community. He volunteered with the Oak Ridge Township Ambulance Squad, where he developed extensive first aid experience. Through that work, he met members of the National Ski Patrol at Mount Peter in Warwick, New York, who offered to teach him to ski in exchange for providing first aid coverage in the ski lodge and helping train new patrol candidates. After earning his National Ski Patrol certification, Jim became a full member of the National Ski Patrol and spent many winters serving at Mount Peter, Craigmeur, Snow Bowl, Vernon Valley, and Hidden Valley ski areas. During the 1970s, he also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster, helping young people develop confidence, outdoor skills, and character through Scouting.
He explored the flooded quarries of northern New Jersey as a scuba diver, and enjoyed hunting and fishing, tied his own flies, crafted beautiful bamboo fly rods, learned to sail on Long Island Sound, and studied celestial navigation simply because he wanted to understand how it worked. If something interested Jim, he learned everything he could about it.
Retirement did not slow Jim down—it simply gave him more time to pursue the interests he had been waiting to explore. He mastered the art of custom knifemaking, earning membership in the prestigious Knifemakers' Guild in 1991. His innovative folding knife designs were later featured in Tactical Knives magazine, and his work became known among collectors throughout the custom knife community. He also immersed himself in HO model railroading, creating detailed layouts that reflected both craftsmanship and patience. Returning to the amateur radio roots established during his Navy service, he volunteered as a communications operator for numerous cycling and community events, quietly helping others behind the scenes.
In 1999, Jim and Fran moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, to be closer to their son Jim and daughter-in-law Kim. There, Jim proudly served with the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, patrolling the waters off the New Hampshire Seacoast. He also began volunteering at local cycling and running events and quickly became part of the community.
Throughout every stage of his life, Jim found new skills to master, new organizations to serve, and new friends to make. He never stopped learning, never stopped contributing, and never lost his sense of curiosity. He will be dearly missed by those who loved him and all whose lives he touched.
Jim is survived by his loving companion of seven years, Mary Ellen Sienkiewicz; his son, James Joseph McGovern Jr. and his wife, Kim McGovern; his daughter, Marianne Macrae and her husband, Stuart Macrae; his grandchildren, Kyle Macrae and his wife, Ronena Wolach; Erin McGovern Young and her husband, Lewis Young; Samantha Macrae Sashigane and her husband, Richard Sashigane; and Ryan McGovern; his niece, Jennifer DeSaye and her husband, Jim DeSaye; his nephew, Bill Zester and his wife, Colleen Zester; and his first great-grandchild, Bowen Aviv Wolach Macrae.
