James P. Moffitt of Alton, NH, son of Harold and Ethel (Sweeney) Moffitt, died on May 12, 2022, after a long illness.
Born in Providence on February 12, 1943, Jim graduated from St. Francis College High School in Biddeford, Maine, and went on to study for 3 years at St. Anselm College in Manchester before joining the Navy. He served in the Navy as a Photo Interpreter for 3 years. He received a BA in History from RI College in 1968, and a Master of Social Work from UConn in 1971.
Jim was a greatly respected Social Worker who worked at Veterans Administration Hospitals in Providence, RI, White River Junction, VT and Manchester, NH. He retired as Chief of Social Work from the Manchester VA Hospital in late 1998, and then continued to work in social work services for several more years for both Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH and Huggins Hospital in Wolfeboro, NH.
Jim’s passion for cycling started in the 1980’s and through the years he made many lifelong friends and deeply enjoyed the countless miles and adventures as he cycled with them throughout New England and France. He also had a great love of reading – especially history books, and more specifically, military history. He enjoyed discussing history and politics and sharing his vast knowledge on both subjects.
Jim was known for his dry wit and deadpan jokes. He had many dear friends and enjoyed social events with friends and family where he loved to share stories and jokes, and he loved to laugh. He was a compassionate, caring and thoughtful person who was very generous with his friends and family and thoroughly enjoyed giving to others. He had a special love for children and relished telling outlandish stories about things like exotic animals living in his garage, which would of course send them all into fits of laughter.
Predeceased by his parents and his sister Margaret Moffitt, Jim is survived by his partner of 25 years Judith Brown (and her immediate and extended family), his sister, Kathleen Moffitt, 3 children Dorothy Moffitt, Sarah Moffitt Teeven (Joel), and Peter Moffitt, 4 grandchildren Caitlin, Michael, John and Joe, niece Leigh Ranucci and nephew John Ranucci. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Buster.
