James (Jim) Edward Smith Sr. of South Hill, VA passed away peacefully, surrounded by his sister Wendy, his son James along with his daughter in law Brenda, after a period of declining health on May 01, 2017 in Manchester, NH at the age of 78.
He was born on August 22, 1938 in Dover, NH to the late Leroy Smith and Mary Claire Thomas. His mother passed when Jim was a child, and was later raised by his loving step mother Therese Hamel Smith.
Jim attended local area schools in Dover and later served as a Sergeant in the US Army. He enjoyed his retirement in South Hill, VA. He loved gardening, mowing his fields, caring for his coy ponds, reading, and taking adventurist day trips with Stephen, Diane, and Thomas.
Jim is predeceased by his sister, Cheryl Diane Garland, his wife Darlene, and step daughter Dana. He is survived by his daughter Mary and husband Bill Galloway of Barrington, NH., son James E Smith Jr and his wife Brenda of Candia, NH., daughter Jessica Smith of Gonic, NH, 6 grandchildren, Rebecca, Nicholas, Austin, Caleb, Connor, and Bryan, 2 great grandchildren, Evan and Nolan, 5 brothers, Tommy and his wife Nancy of Michigan, Lee and his wife Mona of Virginia, Stephen and his wife Diane of Virginia, Michael Morrissey of Barrington, NH, Timothy Morrissey and his wife Cheryl Lynn of Sanford, ME, 1 sister, Wendy Copp and her husband Phil of Montana. He also leaves behind his great friend and partner in crime Thomas Clegg of Dundas, VA, along with several loving nieces and nephews.
Services will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
