Janice K. Allen of Peterborough, died June 1, 2018. She was born August 13, 1933 in Worcester, Massachusetts, daughter of Emily Buckley Kilgore. She attended Worcester public schools, Becker Jr. College and Barbizon School of Fashion Modeling in New York City.
She married Robert B. Allen of Worcester in 1956 and live a short time in Rutland, Massachusetts. In 1957 they moved to Peterborough, where they lived for five years before moving to Dublin, where they lived for 18 years. They have lived the past 38 years in Peterborough.
She took several courses at Keene State College and Mt. Wachusett Community College in Gardner, MA. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed knitting and homemaking. She loved walking and hiking in the woods and was an avid gardener and reader.
In her early years in Peterborough she was a member of the Union Congregational Church and taught Sunday school there for several years; she was the Assistant Sunday School Superintendent and a member of the Women's Fellowship.
She worked at local businesses in Peterborough and in 1979 became the executive director of the former Monadnock Region Association, where she served on the board of the New Hampshire Travel Council. At the time of her retirement, she was employed by Home Health Care Hospice and Community Services in Peterborough.
For several years she was a member of the Family Support Council of Monadnock Developmental Services Region V and served as chairman of the council for two years. She also served on the board of the former Village Savings Bank.
A sixteen year charter member of the Peterborough Lioness Club, she held many offices, including that of president.
Over the years, she volunteered at Peterborough Elementary School, Monadnock Community Hospital and most recently at the Peterborough Town Library's Kyes-Sage Used Bookshop where she was one of the managers. She served as secretary on the board of the Friends of the Peterborough Town Library for 14 years.
She was a member and past president of the Peterborough Garden Club and a past member of the New England Rose Society. She was also a member of the Peterborough Historical Society.
Besides her husband, she leaves two daughters, Laura B. Allen of Keene and Jennifer A. Bungert of Mattapoisett, MA; a son-in-law, Daniel Bungert; and two grandchildren, Emily Bungert of Brooklyn, NY and Benjamin Bungert of Jamaica Plain, MA as well as nieces and nephews. In addition to her mother, Janice was predeceased by her brother, Louis B. Kilgore who died in WWII; brother, Edward W.A. Kilgore and a sister, Nancy B. Gelley, died earlier.
Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of New Hampshire. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Monadnock Family Services, 64 Main St., Keene 03431, Peterborough Town Library, 2 Concord St., Peterborough 03458 or, the family suggests, Community Hospice House, 210 Naticook Rd, Merrimack 03054. Services will be private and the burial will be in her family plot in Rural Cemetery in Worcester.
