Joan Gail (Scott) Rogers

Joan Gail (Scott) Rogers died in a nursing home in Manchester, New Hampshire, on January 10, 2023. She was 87 years old.

She was born in Brighton, Vermont, on May 11, 1935.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Arthur Maurice Rogers, parents, Alba George and Laura (Jean) Scott, older sisters, Pearl (Scott) Whitcomb and Islene May (Scott) Quintey, niece, Jolene E. (Whitcomb) Austin, nephew, Scott A. Quintey, and grandson, Jordan Arthur Lewis. She is survived by her children, Susan Jean (Rogers) Baynes, Bruce Kelly Rogers, and foster daughter, Nora Mae (Walch) Paul; nephews Roger, Ronald, and Jay Whitcomb; niece Becky (Quintey) Flynn; grandchildren Eliza Suzanne Lewis, Dr. Barry Paul Lewis Jr., Jonathan Earl Lewis, Jessica Nicole Rogers, and Annika Marie Rogers; and four great-grandchildren.

Joan grew up in Island Pond, Vermont, until her family moved to Claremont, New Hampshire, in 1941. She attended Stevens High School there but did not graduate. She later earned a certificate of high school equivalency in New Hampshire in 1969. She worked as a nurse’s aide at Claremont Nursing Home in 1980.

Joan married in 1953 to Arthur Maurice Rogers, about 9 months after he returned from his service in the US Navy during the Korean War. They owned a house on Thrasher Road in Claremont, where they raised their children. After Arthur’s death in 1983, Joan moved to Lehigh Acres, Florida, where she lived for 37 years. She received the sacrament of confirmation at St. Anselm’s Episcopal Church in Lehigh Acres in 1986. Her cat Star was her companion for 15 years.

In August 2020, Joan moved to assisted living in Fort Myers, Florida. After evacuating Fort Myers during Hurricane Ian in September 2022, she moved to assisted living in Naples, Florida. In December 2022, she returned to New Hampshire and moved to a nursing home in response to failing health.

Joan’s hobbies included quilting, sewing, and gardening. One of her fondest memories was camping in Fryeburg, Maine. Some of her favorite places included the White Mountains in New Hampshire and the wood lot and Crescent Lake in Unity, New Hampshire. She wanted to be remembered for her sense of humor.

Joan will be interred with her husband Arthur at Mountain View Cemetery in Claremont.
