Joan Elinor (Smith) Lord, 85, died Monday, October 29, 2018 at Havenwood Heritage Heights in Concord, NH. She was born April 22,1933 in Lewiston, ME, the daughter of Jesse and Flora Smith.
Joan graduated from Bates College in 1955 where she met Warner P. Lord. The two were married on September 29, 1956 in Lewiston, ME. She was commissioned in the Army and spent three years training to be a Physical Therapist at Walter Reed Medical Center Hospital in Washington, DC. After the Army the couple moved to Connecticut where their sons, Peter and Parker, were born and raised. A working mom, Joan practiced for many years as a PT with the Visiting Nurses Association of Madison, Connecticut. After separating from Warner in 1982, Joan went on to establish the Therapeutic Center, an Independent Physical Therapy practice in Madison.
Known as "Jodie" to friends and family, she was a gregarious golf & tennis player, and avid Monday night football fan who loved to play games of all kinds. She traveled frequently across the New England states having lived in Maine, Connecticut, and New Hampshire. She was fond of the desert southwest and ranged as far abroad as the great pyramids of Egypt. In 1997 she retired to hilltop with a view in Colebrook NH where she had spent her early childhood summers growing up with her cousin, Beverly. Her time there included many long visits from her close companion Anne Bagley. Joan returned to her roots in Maine in 2001 when she downsized to a cozy condo in Kennebunk. In 2005 she moved into her apartment at Heritage Heights where she found a community of Wii fanatics and fellow game players waiting to play bridge and cribbage.
Joan is survived by her cousin Beverly; her son, Peter with his wife, Linda; and her son Parker with his wife, Christine; and her granddaughter, Hannah.
