Joan M. Matthews, 75, of 501 Colonial Court in Littleton died suddenly at her home on December 30, 2001. Mrs. Matthews was born on December 13, 1926 in Seacliff, New York the daughter of the late Walter and Margaret (Herman) McLaughlin. Prior to moving to Littleton in 1981 she spent most of her life in the Hamptons of Long Island where she and her husband raised their family. She served her community well and was an avid worker at the American Red Cross and volunteer at the Littleton Hospital for over 20 years. She was a parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church and was a member of the Garden Club. Her generosity even went so far as South America where she frequently sponsored less fortunate children. Family members include; three sons, Chris Matthews of Henderson, NC, Damon Matthews of Remsenburg, NY and John Matthews of Cocoa Beach, FL; three daughters, Patty Matthews of Lancaster, NH, Julie Cuthbert of Aberdeen, MD and Margaret Dumont of Merritt Island, FL; five grandchildren, Abigail, Ian, Barry, Topher and Taylor; one sister, Anne Washbourne of Michigan; several nieces and nephews; two aunts; one uncle; and numerous cousins. Mrs. Matthews was predeceased by her husband, John Matthews, in 1994.
