Listen to Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John E. Carberry Jr., 77, of Nashua, who passed at the Crestwood Center in Milford, NH, on December 17, 2025, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Born in Portsmouth, NH, on June 1, 1948, he was the son of John E. Carberry Sr. and Mildred (Wilson). He grew up in Rye Beach, NH, and Dover, NH, where he attended school at St. Mary's Academy and then graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School.

Sports, particularly baseball, were very important to him throughout his life as was music. One Christmas Eve when he was a 10 year-old boy tenor, he sang a beautiful, very moving "O Holy Night" at midnight Mass at St. Joseph's in Dover.

In high school, he sang with the Glee Club and had even sung with a group in recent years. Recently, when he was in  the nursing home, he was able to sing a duet, not missing a word or note despite breathing difficulties.

His many years of loyalty to Boston sports was finally rewarded in 2004 when the Red Sox won the World Series, and in the same year, the Patriots won the Super Bowl.

After graduating from STA, John joined the Army, eventually becoming a medic where he was known as "Doc" to the other soldiers. There was during the Vietnam War era, where he was deployed for a year.

When asked the favorite place he traveled to when he was in the service, he said it was Egypt because of how well they were treated. After 20 years of service to his country, he retired and returned to the Seacoast. Throughout his life, he was proud to be a veteran and developed relationships with other vets for the rest of his life.

John spent many years working at Philbrick's Sports in Dover. His position there made it easy to continue his childhood friendship with Rick, Dan, and George Philbrick. John enjoyed coaching kids in baseball during his time after retirement and played a lot of golf, which he did right up until several months ago. With his gregarious and generous nature, he made friends over his lifetime. In recent years, he had a group that joined him at the Fisher Cat ballgames. He met his Dover friends regularly and still managed to keep up with family events as well.

For the last 25 years, he shared his life with Peggy Lewis of Nashua, who passed away in the Spring of 2024. During that time, they had many adventures as they traveled to Ireland, Scotland, Australia, and many more places around the world.

Along with his parents, John was predeceased by his brothers Jerry and Tim; his longtime companion Peg Lewis, his stepmother Shirley and his great aunts and uncles who raised him.

John is survived by his four children: Sean of Maine, Meagan of New Jersey, Shane of New Hampshire and Shamus of New Hampshire. His nine grandchildren: Dakota, Adam, Liam, Michaela, Madison, Ashton, Cassie, Cora, and Finley; one great-grandson, Victor; his siblings Natalie of Exeter, NH, Michael of Hampton, NH, Becky of West Palm Beach, FL, Patrick of Rye Beach, NH, and Kelli of Portsmouth, NH; and many other nieces and nephews. John will also be greatly missed by Peggy's sons, Parker and Tim, their wives Andrea and Sarah, and their children Jack, Owen, Tyler, and Chase.

Assisting the family with arrangements is the Cremation Society of NH. There will be a Celebration of Life held for John at the NH State Veterans Cemetery, Boscawen, NH, in June of 2026. The family will be announcing the date and time later on. All are welcome to join in honoring John's life.
