John Dennett Fernald, M.D., of Bridgewater, NH, formerly of Needham, MA, died peacefully on Friday, Oct. 6 at Concord Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born June 22, 1920, in West Newton, MA, the son of the late George H. and Frances B. Fernald, the third of six children. He graduated from Amherst College in 1942 and from Columbia University School of Medicine in 1946. He served in the Air Force as a flight surgeon during World War II. He practiced medicine in Needham for 50 years, retiring to Dick Brown Farm in 2000. He leaves his wife, Virginia Harlow, four children, Frances R., McLean, VA, Sandra F. Picurro, Waterville, ME, David B., Sun Fish Lake, MN, and John D., Jr., Index, WA; and a stepson, Robert F. Danner, Renton, WA. His stepdaughter, Deborah J. Danner predeceased him. He also is survived by three grandsons, John and Matthew Picurro, and Michael Fernald, a brother Richard R. Fernald, Peterborough, NH and a sister, Frances F. Roehrig, New Smyrna Beach, FL. A gathering to honor him will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, at 2:00 pm at the Bridgewater Town House and afterwards at Dick Brown Farm, 124 Brock Hill Rd., Bridgewater (comfortable dress).
