John "Jack" Edward Hyland, 88, died Friday, October 17, 2025, at Portsmouth Regional Hospital in Portsmouth, NH. He was born on May 8, 1937, in Worcester, MA, the son of Bernard F. and Claire (Brule) Hyland.
He was the husband of Judith (Pendleton) Hyland. They were married on April 2, 1961, in Greendale, MA. In addition to his wife, Judy, he leaves behind his beloved children, John E. Hyland III (Susan Young) of Littleton, CO and Jodi Bridgman (Thomas) of Southampton, MA; his grandchildren, Stephen Buckner, Mitchell Bridgman, Cassidy Gardner and Logan Bridgman; his sisters, Corlene Agos and Donna D’Ambrosio, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his stepmother, Joyce (Amsden) Hyland, his brother Bernard Hyland and his sister Kathleen Threadgould.
Jack grew up in Webster, MA and joined the Marines after graduating high school. He served 5 years as an aviation electronics operator. Throughout his entire life, he was always proud of being a Marine. After leaving the military, Jack worked for many years as a repair tech for IBM and Kodak, and later for the USPS as an electronics technician. He continued to work for the USPS well into his 80's — crawling over and under huge pieces of mail sorting equipment to troubleshoot and repair issues, working the night shift, with an hour commute each way.
Jack was an avid reader and loved to read anything that had to do with history and computers. Compared to any other possessions, he called his collection of books “the real treasures.”
After spending many years in Colorado with his family, he and Judy returned to New England, and enjoyed their home in Rochester until his passing.
Jack will be dearly missed by everyone in his life.
