John Wentworth Pence

John Wentworth Pence passed away peacefully at age 89 in Dover, NH. Wednesday, February 27, 2019.

One of two children born to John (Jack) Franklin and Eunice (Powers) Pence, on July 9th, 1929 in Lowell, MA. He moved to Marietta, IL for a time where attended Elementary School. The family returned to New England where John attended Jr. High School in Swampscott, MA and High School at the North Shore Agricultural & Technical School in Hawthorne, MA. In 1946 he joined the Navy and toured aboard the USS Little Rock until the vessel's decommissioning in 1950. John married Faith N. Matsubara of Danvers, MA in 1949 and for 51 years until her passing in 2000 they enjoyed travel and raising a family in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. He worked on farms and as a Steeplejack in the mid 1950's until he began his career at Devcon Corporation (a division of Illinois Tool Co.-ITW) in Danvers. He rose through the ranks serving many years traveling as regional sales manager and then as Technical Product Specialist until retirement.

John and Fay loved camping and boating on the water, starting their sailing days in the late 1960's on a 14' Sailfish on Pleasant Lake in Deerfield, NH and then racing as classic 21' Celebrity Sloop on lakes and the ocean. Soon the ocean was their primary destination for recreation and over the years moored many of their boats both sail and motor at Pepperrell Cove in Kittery Point, Maine. From there they explored the Down East Maine to Florida through the inland Waterway and also the Hudson River Canal System all the way up to the Great Lakes. When all these waterways were thoroughly explored, "land arcing" became the thing. They RV'd through most of the US and through Canada all the way to Alaska.

Since 2007, John lived in South Berwick, ME with his son Kelly and family where he enjoyed and took pride in lawn care, preparing gourmet meals and visits from his friends and family. He was known by all to be a genuine, loving, generous and easygoing man with a lively spirit.

John is survived by his sister, Barbara (and Edward) Fielding of Bonnie Eagle, ME, daughter, Bonnie L. (and Douglas) McCormack of Campton, NH and sons, Nickolas F. (and partner Sharon Maier) of Phoenix, AZ, Peter J. (and partner Liz Oneil) of Northfield, NH & N. Kelly (and partner Renee Lecaroz) Pence of South Berwick, ME. In addition to his growing family there are five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

There will be a memorial service and burial planned in late spring. The location and date is to be announced.
