John E. Smith, (CSM RET), 76, of Brownfield, Maine, formerly of Providence, RI died at Memorial Hospital in North Conway, NH on Saturday, July 26th after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Della M. (Tartaglia) Smith; three sons, John Smith Jr. of Derry, NH, Kevin Smith of Hawaii and Karl Smith of Conway, NH; three grandchildren, Ian and Zachariah of Warwick, RI and Audrey of Exeter, NH. He is also survived by two brothers, Edward Smith of Providence, RI and Donald Smith of Warwick, RI. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Anna (Schmidt) Smith; two brothers, Frank and William and by one sister Arlene. Mr. Smith retired from the full-time Rhode Island Army National Guard in September 1983. He also served in the New Hampshire Army National Guard until May 1985. He was a veteran of World War II and Korean Wars and served nearly forty years. He was a member of the American Legion Post 95 in North Conway, NH. He was a former member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Providence, RI and a founding member of the Lutheran Church of the Nativity in North Conway, NH. There are no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 2nd at 2 o'clock at the Lutheran Church of the Nativity, Route 16 in North Conway, NH.
