John Norton Stannard died March 12, 2005 at the Littleton Regional Hospital in Littleton, NH. He was born April 14, 1920 in Manchester, VT, the son of John Henry and Lucy Norton Stannard. John was the oldest of five children: three brothers; James, Raymond and Richard; and one sister, Charlotte Stannard Brooks. All siblings have pre-deceased John except Richard. John was a graduate of Burr and Burton Seminary, Manchester, VT, class of '39. In June, 1942, he married Emma Abbott of Dorset, VT and served in the US Army during WW II. John spent his working life in the family plumbing and heating business of Stannard Company, Inc. He thoroughly enjoyed his customers. John and Emma have a son, John Peter of Dorset, VT, and a daughter, Sally Stannard Kriebel of Thornton, NH. John lived most of his life in South Dorset and Dorset; he was a member of the McBride-Harwood Post, the Dorset Sportsmen's Club, the Dorset United Church of Christ, and served in various Town offices. Among the many things John enjoyed were hunting, fishing, golf, playing the harmonica, and whipping up soups and chowders which his family always relished. Everyone enjoyed John's smile, quiet humor and gentleness. John and Emma retired to Lake Placid, FL for many years. They often spent their summers in Thornton and Campton, NH before moving back to New England. They resided in Thornton two years before moving to Riverglen House in Littleton, NH. Besides his wife and two children, he is survived by four grandsons and two great-grandsons. The Cremation Society of NH is in charge of arrangements; a family graveside service will be held at a later date in Dorset, VT. John's family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the North Country Home Health and Hospice Agency of 536 Cottage Street, Littleton, NH 03561 which provided such excellent and compassionate care to John and his family.
