John Vattes, 90, a lifelong New Hampshire resident, devoted family man, and proud Marine, passed away peacefully at home on November 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on July 28, 1935, in Manchester, NH, to Herman and Rose (Fischer) Vattes, he is predeceased by his siblings, Helen Diggins and Carl Vattes. Answering the call of duty as a young man, John served honorably as a U.S. Marine during the Korean War, a source of pride that never faded. He spent 30 years working at Public Service Company of New Hampshire before enjoying a 7-year second career at the New Hampshire Housing and Finance Authority.
A man of strong conviction and community spirit, John was passionate about the political process. He devoted countless hours to working on numerous successful campaigns, firmly believing in the power of civic engagement. In his younger years, he excelled in a bowling league. In quieter moments, he was an avid reader and could often be found with a book in his hand.
Above all, John cherished his family. He was the beloved husband of 64 years to Dorothy (Burnham); the loving father of Wendy (Vattes) Dee, Lori Vattes, Mark Vattes, and Shane Vattes; and the proud "Papa" to Benjamin, Julia, and Luke, who were the lights of his life. His greatest joy was spending time with them, and he never missed a sporting event or dance recital. He often enjoyed golf outings with his sons and grandsons. He will be remembered for his steadfast loyalty, dry sense of humor, and generous heart.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Cremation Society of New Hampshire located at 243 Hanover St. Manchester, NH, on December 8, 2025, at 1pm.
