John W. Herbert, a proud Navy veteran, devoted family man, and longtime member of the Salisbury community, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2025, at the age of 82.
Born and raised in City Island in the Bronx, New York, John carried the spirit of the sea and community with him throughout his life. He attended grade school in City Island and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree from Bryant University in Rhode Island.
John served with honor in the United States Navy, dedicating 28 years to active duty and reserves from 1962 to 1989. His military service was a source of great pride, reflecting his unwavering commitment to country and duty.
For over 50 years, John made his home in Salisbury, New Hampshire, where he served not only as a neighbor and friend but also as a civic leader. He held positions as Selectman and Town Moderator, giving his time and energy to the betterment of his town. A man of faith, John was also a devoted parishioner of the Salisbury Congregational Church, where his presence was a constant and comforting one.
John found great joy in the outdoors. He especially loved hiking and swimming, and in his younger years, he participated in mini triathlons—always embracing a challenge with enthusiasm and determination.
John is survived by his loving family: his daughter Cindy Tarr and her husband Keith Tarr, and their son Nicholas; his son James Herbert and his wife Catherine Herbert, and their daughters Emily and Mia; his stepdaughter Athena Wiley; his granddaughter Ciara Wiley and her partner Jenn Caffarel; and his granddaughter Danielle and her husband Aliess John.
He was predeceased by beloved family members who welcomed him with open arms in eternal rest.
A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the Salisbury Congregational Church, 13 Franklin Rd, Salisbury NH 03268.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salisbury Congregational Church, honoring John's enduring faith and lifelong commitment to service and community.
