Joseph A. Bamford's Obituary

Listen to Obituary

Joseph A. Bamford, affectionately known as “Joe Bam,” age 70, of Methuen, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on March 17, 2026.

Born on December 26, 1955, in Everett, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Florence V. (Snook) Bamford and the late Arthur G. Bamford.

Joe was a lifelong Massachusetts resident who built his life around family, loyalty, and connection. He was a graduate of Saugus High School, Class of 1973; the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Class of 1977; and New England School of Law, Class of 1982. He practiced as an attorney for as long as he was able—a profession he was proud of and dedicated to throughout his life. He had a deep love for coaching his children and for anything related to music.

Known for his strong personality, quick wit, and unmistakable presence, Joe left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Whether through his stories, humor, or straightforward nature, he had a way of ensuring he would never be forgotten.

He was the beloved husband of Melanie Bamford of Saugus, Massachusetts, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage. Together, they built a life centered on family and enduring commitment. For more than 25 years, Melanie devoted herself to caring for Joe as he battled Huntington’s disease. In his final years, their son Sam was also by his side, helping to provide care and support.

Joe was the devoted father of Samuel Bamford of Haverhill, Massachusetts; Joshua Bamford and his wife, Jillian Bamford, of Dracut, Massachusetts; and Rachel L. Judkins and her husband, Christopher Judkins, of Merrimac, Massachusetts.

He was a proud and loving grandfather to Charlotte Bamford, Maggie Bamford, Angela Bamford, and Evelyn Bamford of Peabody, Massachusetts; Simone Bamford of Salem, Massachusetts; Cora Judkins and Avery Judkins of Merrimac, Massachusetts; and Keeva Bamford and Colbie Bamford of Dracut, Massachusetts.

He was the loving brother of Bam Angeles of California, and the late Jo Ann Best of Centerville, Massachusetts.

Joe will be deeply missed by his in-laws, Elizabeth Purvinis and her husband, John, of Candia, New Hampshire; Robin Delurey of Winchester, Massachusetts; Susan Loring of Fitchburg, Massachusetts; and J. Scott Lumsden and Joanna McInnis of Revere and South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, along with many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.

To his family, his friends who became family, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him, we will forever cherish the stories he shared, the lessons he taught us, and the love he gave so freely. His legacy will live on in each of us.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Michael’s Function Hall at the Phoenician Restaurant in Haverhill, Massachusetts. All family, friends, and children are welcome.

Huntington’s disease is a rare, inherited condition that affects the brain over time, impacting movement, memory, and personality. It is often described as a combination of ALS, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease due to its wide-ranging effects. It is a difficult journey not only for those diagnosed, but also for the families who walk beside them with love, patience, and unwavering support.

In lieu of flowers, Joe would ask that donations be made to support future treatment and the needs of the next generations of Bamfords affected by this disease. Donations may be made here:

We continue to pray and hope for a cure.
