Joseph H. Cotton, 100, of Barnstead died on May 25, 2001 at Epsom Manor after a period of declining health. Mr. Cotton was born on April 13, 1901 in South Boston, MA the son of the late Joseph and May (Pavey) Cotton. He married Ruth E. Hallett on October 29, 1927 and resided in Massachusetts until 1933 when he moved to Barnstead . He owned and operated Cotton Flower Shop and Greenhouses in both Barnstead and Pittsfield. At the same time he worked for the Racing Department at Rockingham Park for thirty one years. He retired at the age of 71. For nineteen years he drove back and forth between Barnstead and Dayton, Florida where he spent his winters. In 1993 where he remained in Barnstead due to failing health. Mr. Cotton was a Representor in the State Legislature for six terms and was appointed by Dr. Blood. He was a Selectman and Moderator for the town of Barnstead and was a former Treasurer for the Barnstead Fire Department. He was a Chartered member of the Rotary Club, a member of the Pleiades Chapter of the Eastern Star #41 and a member of the Corinthian Lodge all in Pittsfield. He was also a member of the Friendship Lodge in Wilmington, MA. Family members include; one son, Joseph H. Cotton, Jr. of Gilmanton; three daughters, Roberta Heywood of Londonderry, Nancy Wheeler of Hopkinton and Sandra McKenzie of Barnstead; ten grandchildren; and fifteen great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth E. (Hallett) Cotton on July 20, 1996, two brothers, John L. Cotton and George R. Cotton, two sisters, Florence Ridgeway and Geraldine Carlton and one grandson, Joel F. Cotton. Private Services will be held at River View Cemetery in Barnstead at the convenience of the family.
