Born in Lawrence Ma, 1931. Joe attended Lawrence schools until he joined the Air Force in 1951 serving in Korea and Okanawa. In the service he received training in Meteorology as a Navigator and as an Upper Air Specialist. Later going on to Penn State to receive his degree in Meteorology. He also received a degree in Management from SNHU. Joe worked for the National Weather Service in Boston, Nantucket Island, and Albany NY. He also worked as a Meteorologist for the Strategic Air Command at the Command and Control Center in Amherst Ma. He retired from the Weather Office in Concord NH as the Meteorologist In Charge. Duties included being the Weather Service Liaison to the NH FEMA Office, NH State Aeronautics, and Governors Office. As Liaison he briefed the state agencies on potential and ongoing severe weather. He was also keeper of the weather records and in this capacity was called to testify as an expert witness in Federal and State courts. Joe also taught Aviation Weather at Hawthorn College, Antrim Aviation College, and a special weather course designed by the American Meteorological Society for High School science teachers.
Joe finally settled in Bedford NH where he was a resident for over 55 years. He is survived by his with wife of 63 years Jean Hansbury McCall. He leaves behind son Mark McCall and partner Sue Brown Carlberg, son James McCall and wife Gisele McCall, and daughter Susan McCall. His grandchildren Meagan McCall, Ryan McCall, and Nolan McCall and his spouse Ryan Viele. One great grandaughter Rosalie McCall Feighery. Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Bedford Kiwanis, and Elizabeth Seaton Church. He enjoyed playing golf, a good glass of scotch, and leading the family at any opportunity in a singalong. Those who knew Joe will remember his quite calm demeanor, great smile, and peace sign greetings.
A memorial gathering will be held at the Cremation Society of New Hampshire on Friday, July 25th from 10:00am to 12:00pm, with a memorial service to follow from 12:00pm to 1:00pm on 243 Hanover Street, Manchester, NH 03104. After services, a cemetery committal will be held at 1:00pm at the Bedford Center Cemetery, located on 14 Church Rd, Bedford, NH 03110.
After the conclusion of services, attendees are invited to the Puritan Backroom from 1:30pm to 4:30pm.
