Joseph "Joe" Emanuele Scaro, 93, of Concord, died peacefully Oct 16th, 2013.
He was born May 1st, 1920, the son of immigrant Sicilians, Joseph F. and Joanna Scaro. At first they lived on Emmet Street, the one single street in all of South Boston where people who were not Irish lived. After his father's death, Joe's mother managed to save enough money to purchase a 3 decker home in Dorchester and he grew up there. He had to quit school to help earn money for his family - a brother and five sisters - and was working up until signing on with the Army Air Corp. in 1942. He was sent to the Pacific, and flew 40 bombing missions as Radio/Waist gunner with his crew on the B24 Bombs Lullaby (read more about his military service and missions at www.bombslullaby.org). He received many medals, including the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged a T/Sgt.
After the war, he married Mary (Sullivan) Scaro, with whom he had 3 children. Though they were divorced and she predeceased him, he passed still very much in love with her.
He spent many years as a Letter Carrier for the USPS in Belmont MA, and fixing TVs and radios at night, trying to make a better life for his wife and children. After retiring, he spent many happy and independent years in Naples, FL. When he became too ill to remain there, he relocated to NH and spent the rest of his days in Concord.
He loved babies; often stopping mid-sentence to turn and smile at one if it was nearby.
He is survived by his older sister Agrippina (Billy) Abate, younger sister Mary Gannon, daughter Diane Kamer, daughter Susan Feldman, son Joseph D. Scaro, grandson John Steven Kamer, and grandson Paul Michael Kamer. He was predeceased by 3 sisters.
A graveside service with Military Honors will be held at the NH State Veterans Cemetery on Wednesday, October 23rd at 3PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Air Warrior Courage Foundation or the Cure Alzheimer's Fund.
