Kathleen Meikle

Kathleen Meikle—a wife and mother whose intensity, fearlessness, and toughness saw her through a long very interesting life—passed away on July 19, 2024, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth, Massachusetts, with her family at her bedside. She had recently celebrated her 99th birthday.

Kathleen, or Kay as she was sometimes called, wanted nothing more than to love and to be loved.

She excelled at knitting, needlepoint, and crochet and crafted spectacular traditional Irish pattern knit sweaters. She relished baking and teaching her grandchildren to cook. She taught the children to play Cribbage and adored playing Bridge and Whist. Kay treasured all animals, and always had a pet companion by her side. She especially loved small dogs and was terribly fond of cats.

Kay was 14 in 1939 and living in England when WW II broke out. All her teenage years were spent under a German bombing campaign, her only dream was of fleeing England. Kay achieved her goal at the end of the war and went on to live in Canada, Germany, and Mexico. Her life in the US landed her in Kentucky, North Carolina, Colorado, finally making her home in Lowell Massachusetts.

Kay is survived by her children Roy Somers of Hanover, Kathleen Alexander (Mills) of Belmont, Jane Smith of New Hampshire, David Smith of New Hampshire, and Paul Brownell of Canada and predeceased by her daughter Joan Brownell of Canada. Her grandchildren (she was Nana to all of them), are Kylie and Jared Alexander, Bill Bryant, Roy Smith, Robert Boudreau, Danny Smith, Shannon Smith, Kyle Smith, Melissa Keegan, David Gougen, and Travis Somers. She also has seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
