Nashua, NH – Kenneth J Bury, age 84, passed away peacefully with Alice, his loving wife of 60 years, by his side on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, after a brave year battling pancreatic cancer.
Born in Brooklyn, NY and spending most of his youth and early adulthood in Deer Park, Long Island, Ken was a self-taught master handyman and showed his love by fixing virtually all things for family and friends. In his early teens, he assisted his father with building his family home from the ground up! He also loved to recall taking apart the engine of his first car and putting it back together just to learn how it worked.
Ken attended Brooklyn Polytech where he enlisted in the ROTC program and earned his undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering. He then served as 1st Lieutenant with the US Army and was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds where his first child was born. Following his time in the military, Ken obtained his Masters in Operational Research from NYU.
He was most proud of his early employment at Grumman Aerospace which allowed him the unique opportunity to work on the Apollo lunar missions.
After the birth of his third child, a job change relocated the family to the suburban town of Randolph, NJ where they quickly made roots and lifelong friends. Ken and Alice fell in love with the Jersey Shore and spent many family summer vacations in Ocean City. Ken was thrilled to return to O.C. most recently in June of 2023 for his grandson’s wedding.
Ken and Alice’s last relocation was to New Hampshire where they have called home for the past thirty years. In retirement Ken enjoyed spending time with his expanding family in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and New Jersey, as well as taking long drives with Alice throughout the backroads of New England, often stopping along the way to chat with the locals. In the summer, Ken loved tending to his garden and sharing the produce with friends and neighbors. As a much-needed respite from the northern winters, they looked forward to one month each year in Englewood, FL.
As a veteran, Ken was passionate about supporting those who served in the military. He always carried in his wallet memorial stars cut from retired flags that he would present as a thank you to any stranger he met who served. Ken and Alice were also regular volunteers with the “Pease Greeters” who welcome troops passing through Portsmouth, NH airport on their way to/from deployments across the world.
Along with many friends and extended family, Ken is survived by his devoted wife Alice Bury; daughters Ellen Montibello and her husband Stephen of Londonderry, NH and Laura Cassidy of Concord, NH; son Steven Bury and his wife Allison Werry of Kinnelon, NJ.
Lovingly known as both PopPop and Papa, he is also survived by his seven beloved grandchildren - Bradford Cassidy and his wife Jaime of New York, NY; Kyle Montibello of Portland, ME; Sean Montibello of Nashua, NH; Benjamin Cassidy of Delray Beach, FL; Ryan Montibello of Hopkinton, NH; and Griffin and Alexandra Bury, both of Kinnelon, NJ.
