Lawrence C Frederick, 86, of Merrimack NH passed away on April 22, 2020. At the time of his death, he was a resident of The Arbors of Bedford Assisted Living.
Larry was born in 1933 in Boston, MA to the late M. Dolores (Murray) and Howard Frederick. He was the oldest of the family's 7 children. Following high school, Larry served in the US army during the Korean Conflict. His military experience enabled him to then pursue higher education, which he did with fervor and passion. He completed both his BS and MS at The University of NH and then his PhD in Physical Oceanography at Oregon State University.
Possessed of a brilliant mind and a quest for knowledge, Larry functioned as an oceanographer for most of his career. He worked at Sanders Corp for a time and then at PSNH for the next 23 years until retirement. He was a key member of the research and implementation team at the Seabrook nuclear power center.
Larry is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Carolyn. They raised a family and built a life together through thick and thin and incredible change in the world around them.
He is predeceased by their eldest child, Jonathan. Larry is further survived by his daughter Jennifer Goyette and her husband, David, and by his son Andrew Frederick and his wife, Francine Gagne.
Larry leaves behind 6 grandchildren: Kristen, Jordan, Sandra, Alexander, Sawyer, and Jacob. Additionally, there are 8 great grandchildren: Dillon, Ivy, Alex, Hayden, Levi, Pearl, and Jack. Ironically, the youngest of this generation was born just hours before Larry's passing and was several days later given the name Skylar.
Larry was predeceased by his sisters, Patricia, and Jacqueline. He is survived by his sisters, Joanne and Dorothy, and brothers, James and Michael.
Larry also touched the lives of nephews, nieces, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and care providers. Special consideration is given to the Barrett family, Rachel Moura, and Sue and Art. They will miss his presence in their lives.
Larry had a life-long interest in science and nature, which he passed down to the younger generations. Camping, hiking, and canoeing were regular family activities. Yet, he could also sit for hours with a child in his lap, reading and teaching from the many nature books he owned. Respect for all creatures and for the environment were stressed. His affinity for mathematics, physics, and scientific terminology was at genius level. Though not one to flaunt it, he could in conversation nevertheless regale and impress others with his vast knowledge. Larry was a voracious reader and did so until the time he was no longer physically capable. He also dabbled in mechanics and was known to be able to fix almost anything.
Loved ones will remember his humor and ability to turn a phrase. He was never shy about throwing in a pun and enjoyed speaking and singing in multiple languages. Through his intellect, wit, tutorship, dignity, respect, and sheer effort, Lawrence Frederick touched many lives and forever left this world a better place for having been in it.
The family wishes to extend particular gratitude to the staff at the Arbors who provided exemplary care over these past difficult months. Other organizations and individuals who have been of tremendous support to Larry and family over the past several years include Tina, Bonnie, the Day Away program, Brookhaven Hospice, and the St Joseph caregiver support group. Thank you one and all.
