Dr. Lawrence Louis Giandomenico, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on September 28th, 2024, at the age of 81, surrounded by family.
Lawrence (Larry) was born in Norwood, MA on June 27, 1943, to Louise Rappani and Daniel Giandomenico. He grew up in Walpole, MA, working in his father’s gas station rebuilding cars, fishing, hunting and skating on town ponds. He was an avid hockey player, playing for Walpole High School and Providence College teams. In 1966, he married his wife of 57 years, Donna Marie Silvi, his life companion and best friend since childhood.
He was the first in his family to receive a Doctorate degree, which he completed at the home of the Nittany Lions at Penn State University in 1971. Larry served as an Army officer during the Vietnam war in 1967-68, where he flew helicopters and fixed wing aircraft on reconnaissance, war fighting, and rescue missions.
He was a school superintendent in South Dakota on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in Eagle Butte, SD, in the Berkshires in Sheffield, MA, and in Berlin, CT, before becoming a tenured Professor at the State University of New York in Plattsburgh, NY. He retired at the age of 70, so that he and Donna could divide their time between their homes in Bradenton, FL, and Plattsburgh, NY.
He was a passionate do-er of the things he loved—gardening, hunting, raising dogs, fishing, and tennis—a force that inspired drive and determination for his family.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Donna, his four daughters and their partners, Laurie Giandomenico (Melissa), Nicki Giandomenico, Donna Bean (Bryan), and Danielle Job (Jamie), and seven grandchildren: Nonie, Enzo, William, Colton, Olivia, Vahn and Evan.
Services will be held at 10am on Saturday, October 19th, 2024, at Valcour Inn, 3714 US-RT 9, Peru NY, 12973.
