Lawrence D. Toth "Larry", age 55, passed away peacefully at home in Nashua, NH, on Thursday, May 13, 2021, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer.
Born in Winchester, MA, Larry grew up in Tewksbury, MA, and graduated in 1984 from Shawsheen Valley Technical High School. He joined the Air Force after graduation, and upon completing basic training went to Keesler AFB in Mississippi where he trained to be an Air Traffic Controller. He spent two years stationed at RAF Bentwaters in England before transferring to Tyndall AFB, Florida. With a Good Conduct Medal and an honorable discharge from the Air Force in 1988, he returned home to New England. In 1989 he began his career at Boston Air Route Traffic Control Center (aka "Boston Center") in Nashua, NH. During his time there he served as a certified on-the-job instructor and controller-in-charge for the FAA, an Area A representative and vice president for NATCA local ZBW, lead for the Boston Center Safety Action Council, subject matter expert on several collaborative work groups and airspace redesigns, and actively participated on the ZBW Labor Relations team. With over 32 years of distinguished federal service, Larry retired in May of 2018.
Larry was known for his generosity, his calming presence, and his thirst for knowledge. He had a great sense of humor, sharp wit, and was a wonderful storyteller. He was a mentor and trusted advisor to family, friends, and colleagues alike. He was a devoted uncle to his four nieces whom he spoke about often and with great pride.
Larry was also known for his colorful Hawaiian shirts and his love of 80s music. He could often be heard singing random lyrics over and over, which his coworkers called "Larry-oke". He was an avid fisherman, and spent as much of his free time as possible on the water. He loved horror movies, football, books, trivia, bird watching, dogs, travel, and astronomy. He was finicky about his chocolate and always traveled with an emergency stash of Hershey's Special Dark.
Larry is survived by his life-partner Angie Smith of Nashua, NH, his parents Lawrence and Patricia Toth of Tewksbury, MA, his brother and sister-in-law Stephen and Kimberly Toth of Nashua, NH, his sister and brother-in-law Karen and Jim Damouras of Belchertown, MA, and his four nieces: Calandra Damouras, Angela Toth, Abby Damouras, and Cassandra Toth.
Per Larry's wishes, there will be no funeral. A memorial bash will be held in the late summer or early fall, and Larry requested that it be "an upbeat, non-somber event". He also asked that donations in his memory be made to one of the following: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Mass General Cancer Center. Memorial funds in his name have been set up for both.
Larry touched many lives. His absence will be felt deeply, and he will be greatly missed.
So when you get the call, grab your loudest Hawaiian shirt and the lyrics to your favorite 80s song, and we will gather to remember Larry the way he wished to be remembered.
