Lillian Elizabeth (Speedie) Alpaugh passed away on Nov. 3, 2014, Born August 25th 1921 to Arthur D. and Catherine E. (Meyers) Speedie in Winchester, MA, Lillian Elizabeth (Speedie) Alpaugh attended New Trier - while living in Kenilworth, IL, then graduated from high school in Winchester, MA. She continued her education at Simmon's College where she was editor of the "Simmon's News" and a founder of the Simmons Outing Club. She graduated in 1943 with a degree in English. Next stop was Washington, DC as a civilian working with the Army Map Service drawing maps by hand. Summers were spent on Governor's Island in Lake Winnipesaukee where she started and was editor of "The Island Item" and met her husband and life-long best friend, Harold R. Alpaugh, who predeceased her in 2011. They were married in 1945 and soon moved back to Winchester to take care of her ailing mother. After her mother's death they, now a family of 5, moved to Topsfield, MA where Lillian was very active in the lives of, now, 4 children as a Brownie, Cub Scout, Girl Scout Leader, and Sunday school teacher. Moving to Weston, MA she continued her family activities as well as trained as a tutor for children with language disabilities. Settling in Hollis, NH after the children were grown, she volunteered at the Hollis Public Library and as a Hospice Volunteer. She maintained her long lasting friendships through her "luncheon club" meetings with special friends from Topsfield for over 30 years as well as with a new group of friends in Hollis, the "KnitWits" who regularly gathered in friendship.
She requested a "family dinner" to celebrate her life with her children â Gary Alpaugh of Watertown, MA; Elizabeth Alpaugh-Côté of Peterborough, NH; Wendy Alpaugh of Stonington, ME; Priscilla Cotter of Maynard, MA; their spouses and children â Kim, Rachel and Kiley Alpaugh; Ray and Robynne Cote; Bill, Keegan, Parker McDonnell, and Molly Lemoine and husband, David; and David, Timothy, and Adelaide Cotter, great granddaughter Sky Lynn Vorce - and nieces: Mary Harrison, Mercedes Sparck, Rae Lynn Warren and her husband, David.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Home Health & Hospice Care in Merrimack, NH or St. Joseph Community Services, Inc. â Meals on Wheels â in Nashua, NH which helped sustain her once she lost her sight. Arrangements by the Cremation Society of NH
