On July 13, 2019 Lorraine Sophia Levy-Duboys passed away, with her son Scott and son-in-law Phil by her bedside, holding her hand. She was 85 years old, and had lived a very full life. She spent a greater part of her life doing more for others, than anyone ever did for her. Lorraine was one of a kind, and certainly marched to the beat of her own drum.
Always ahead of her time, Lorraine wore jeans to school in the 40s and 50s, cut classes and dropped out at 15, eventually getting her GED in her 40s. As a young lady, she loved horseback riding (Western), driving cars at 100 mph on the sands of Daytona beach, skiing unbelievably dangerous slopes in New Hampshire, and riding a 1949 Harley Davidson Springer.
In the early 1970s, Lorraine ran law offices in Manhattan, acting as office manager and paralegal. She ran an immigration law firm in NYC, when immigration was much different than it is nowadays. She was also a court reporter for the Southern District of Manhattan and worked beside a fellow court reporter, Harvey Keitel, who later became a famous actor.
Lorraine fought to get recognition for court reporters who used the steno mask/recording system, and was the first to be allowed to join their organization using her method. She fought for lemon laws, against corruption in the courts, and for the rights of those under guardianship. She helped found a non-profit, NASGA â National Association to Stop Guardian Abuse. Lorraine was also a member of Mensa.
If you were a friend in trouble, Lorraine would have your back. She helped people who were being taken advantage of by corporate and government red tape and incompetence, guiding them through the process of getting what was rightfully theirs.
Lorraine also loved animals and over the years she rescued many feral cats, keeping some and getting others neutered. She also adopted shelter cats and supported the shelters with donations. Jasmine and Puss, Lorraine's two cats will always have a good home and will be well cared for.
At 85, Lorraine enjoyed a long and very interesting life. She touched many other people's lives by helping them, always putting herself last, right up to the end. Life wasn't always easy but she was a fighter. Now our hope for her is that whatever comes next, she will be at peace. She will never be forgotten, and will live on in our hearts and minds.
