Margaret Ellen Nicholson Brooke, of North Pond Road, Marlboro, VT passed away peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones on Saturday evening February 22, 2025.
Margaret was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 27, 1937, the daughter of Finley Clayton “Nick” Nicholson and Edith Middleton Nicholson. She was the oldest of four sisters. She was predeceased by her parents and her three sisters, Anne Sandberg, Nancy Powell and Janet Roll.
Margaret married Kenneth Edward Brooke in Omaha, Nebraska in 1960. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years in 2010. She raised three children: Carol Louise Brooke-deBock of Marlboro, VT (Will), Ellen Brooke Wanless of West Seattle, WA (Bill) and John David Brooke of Fort Worth, TX. She was Granny to eight grandchildren: Cory, Aaron, Morgan, Forrest, Xydel, Xochitl, Zaed and Xia. She was also Granny to three great-grandchildren: Ellie, Torin and Alden.
Margaret raised her family primarily in Lexington, MA where she lived for fifty years. She worked in the Lexington public school system and then at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government for many years. She was involved in civic life in Lexington, by being a Town Meeting representative, volunteering at the library, being active at the First Parish church, and being a member of various book groups.
Margaret will be remembered as an avid and cultured reader, and a skilled and empathic conversationalist by all who knew her.
In 2022, she moved to the Bradley House in Brattleboro, VT where she quickly found a new place to call home and a community where she felt comfortable. In November of 2024, after some changes in her health, she moved into the home of her daughter Carol, where she lived out her days gracefully and with dignity.
