MARGARET HARVEY
Margaret (Maynard) Harvey of Wolfeboro, N.H., age 79, died May 17, 2011, at Hyder Family Hospice House in Dover, N.H., after a long illness.
Born in Boston, Mass., on April 28, 1932, she grew up in Brookline, Mass., graduating from Brookline High School in 1950. She continued her education at the Chandler School for Women in Boston and worked for several years as a secretary at the Pilgrim Press Publishing House in Boston and at Harvard University Press in Cambridge, Mass. She later enjoyed many years working in the nursing office of the former Woonsocket (R.I.) Hospital and then in the development office of the Bangor (Maine) Theological Seminary. For the last 17 years, she had been librarian at the Wakefield Library in the historic district of Wakefield, N.H.
She married the Rev. George Harvey of Holbrook, Mass., in 1958 and partnered with him in pastorates he held in Fryeburg, Me; Slatersville, R.I.; Brewer, Me.; and Wakefield, N.H. They retired to Wolfeboro, N.H., in 2004.
Peg, as she was fondly known to all, was known for her wonderful sense of humor, her beautiful soprano voice, and her love of Scrabble and cribbage. Before marriage, she was an active member of the former Harvard United Church of Christ in Brookline, Mass., participating in the Pilgrim Fellowship and in both the childrenâs and adult choirs under the direction of eminent organist E. Power Biggs. She particularly enjoyed participation in voice and hand bell choirs and in the work of the various church womenâs groups, of which she was often president. She served a term as president of the N.H. State Womenâs Fellowship of the United Church of Christ and represented that group to a womenâs fellowship meeting in Zimbabwe, an experience that fostered a lasting love for the people of that country.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, George A. Harvey of Dover, N.H.; daughters Faith Harvey of Dover, Martha Harvey of North Windham, Me., and Deborah (Harvey) Gurka of Dover, and son David Harvey of Woonsocket, R.I.; granddaughters Katherine and Jennifer Gurka of Dover, and Georgia Nolan of North Windham; and sisters-in-law Phyllis (Harvey) Miles of Holbrook, Mass., and Alison Harvey of Waterville, Me.. She was pre-deceased by her mother, Lillian Maynard, and her beloved aunt Mary "Polly" Adams, both of Brookline, Mass.
A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 2718 Wakefield Road, Wakefield, N.H., on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wakefield Congregational Church, P.O. Box 809, Sanbornville, N.H. 03872 to support the Friends of Orphan Trust program in Zimbabwe.
