Marion Daniel Arvin

Marion Daniel “Dan” Arvin, 78, of Saxtons River, Vermont passed away on April 6th, 2022, after complications with surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock hospital.

 Dan who went by Danny in his youth was born March 20th, 1944, to Marion Leon “Bud” Arvin and Virginia Rose “Jenni” (née Cannon) Arvin in Loogootee, Indiana. He graduated from St. John’s Catholic High School Class of 1962.  During his childhood, he worked on various family farms and would go musseling to provide shells to his grandfather who made them into buttons.  He was also an avid hunter and fisher.  He liked to tell a story about how he would wait for the guards with their German Sheppards to pass by.  He would then jump the fence at Crane Naval Center to go fishing.  "They always were biting there." 

He went on to receive a bachelor's degree from Bellarmine College in 1968 majoring in history & political science and minoring in accounting & general business.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Army, which had been his lifelong dream.  He was medically discharged at the end of basic training due to hearing issues and having one foot smaller as they corrected his club foot when he was a baby.

He married Mary Elaine Harritt of Washington, Indiana on July 13th, 1968. Their favorite weekend pastimes during their early years were camping and rock hunting, which turned into an amateur jewelry-making hobby. They also loved gardening. Planting enough to can tomatoes, green beans, jams, and sweet chili relish for the year. They lived together in Vincennes, Indiana for over 25 years before moving to Newburgh, Indiana, and most recently resided in Saxtons River, Vermont. Together they raised two children.  Then in 2018, they celebrated their 50th anniversary.

Dan was very active with his children and grandchildren's lives throughout the years. In addition, he was Scout Master of Troop 210, Webelo Leader, Den Leader, 4-H Leader, and an active member of American Legion Post 73.  He was also very active in the George Rogers Clark Volunteers; an organization that participated in American Revolutionary War reenactments.

He leaves as his legacy two children: Sherri Arvin (Neil Mallan) and Charles Arvin (Misty Clawson).  He also leaves to cherish his memory, his stepfather, Dave Strange, (Loogootee, IN), and his sister, Patty (Steve) Williams (Noblesville, IN).

He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Liam and Austin Mallan, Izabel Arvin, and Kaitlin Clawson. He also leaves behind his niece, Mikki Carr (Williams), and nephew, Pat Williams along with their beloved children.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elaine, parents: Bud and Jenni, and his infant granddaughter, Sophia Pereira Silva Arvin.

Dan was involved in multiple jobs throughout his professional career. He started in grocery store management in Eastern Indiana / Western Ohio.  He then went on to be the sales manager of Jewel Tea Home Shopping Services in Eastern Kentucky.  Starting in 1974, he settled down in Vincennes, IN where he worked as Warehouse Superintendent of a wholesale food distributor, E. Bierhaus and Sons for 25 years.

Upon the company shutting down, Dan finally made it back to Kentucky where he worked for Alcan Aluminum as a Crane/Tapper operator. 

In his retirement, he loved to attend school events, band concerts, and scouting events with his grandchildren. He and his wife also took up birdwatching along with bird feeding. 

A Celebration of Life is being planned but has not yet been scheduled.  In lieu of flowers, please donate in his memory to your favorite organization, church, local school, community band, or Boy Scout Troop.
