Marjorie Helen Scribner Benz, born in New Haven, CT on March 21, 1919 and resident of the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, NH, died peacefully on July 18, 2006. As a 1st Lieutenant in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II, Marjorie Benz was stationed in London, England after arriving on a troop ship on which she met her future husband, Major Laurence P. Benz, Sr., Ret., then a 2nd Lieutenant, US Army. Marj Scribner and Larry Benz were married in The Oratory in London on February 19, 1944, followed by a brief honeymoon at the White Cliffs of Dover. After 59 years of marriage, Larry Benz died in February 2003. Marjorie Benz earned her undergraduate degree at Mount Saint Mary’s College in Hooksett, NH and her Master of Education at Boston University. She was a teacher and Title I Coordinator for the City of Manchester School Department. During her career Marjorie Benz created the “Basic Skills in Reading” program that received a National Education Administration award followed by federal grants to train teachers in other school districts in the United States how to use “BASK”. Marjorie Benz retired from the Manchester School District in 1981. In Her Life: She is survived by Coralee and Aflred Kleiner of Manchester, NH; Barbara and John Richards of Williamstown, MA; Marilyn Benz of Hooksett, NH; Elizabeth Benz of Tilton, NH; Mary and Laurence Benz of Hooksett, NH and Susan Benz of Austin, TX. Her sister, Lela Loranger lives in Manchester, NH. Her grandchildren’s families include: Kathryn and Don Dickerson of Minneapolis, MN; Michelle and Timothy Kleiner of Manchester, NH; Becky and Russell Young of Hooksett, NH, Carolyn and Peter Kutney of Atkinson, NH and Jennifer Hammack of Hooksett, NH. Her great-grandchildren are Briana Dickerson and Madilyn Dickerson of Minneapolis, MN, Olivia Kleiner and Shawn Kleiner of Manchester, NH, Fallon Barlow and Fagan Hammack of Hooksett, NH. Funeral services and internment will be held Friday, July 21, 2006 at 1:00 PM in the chapel at the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery in Boscawen, NH. A celebration of her life will be held at The Athens Restaurant, 31 Central Street, Manchester, NH, at 4:00 PM, Saturday, July 22, 2006. Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org. The Cremation Society of New Hampshire is in charge of arrangements.
