Marjorie “Marge” Mering Sherman, 78, died on Tuesday October 29, 2007 at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital, following a long illness. Marge was born in 1929 in Kansas City, Missouri, the daughter of Ray and Clara Mering. She attended the Sunset Hill School in Kansas City and then Middlebury College as a member of the class of 1951. She was married to Frank Sherman in 1950. They lived in Kansas City for a few years, then settled in Old Greenwich, Connecticut where they raised their four children. Marge became very active in the Junior League and created a nationally recognized volunteer program for the Greenwich Public Schools, recruiting and managing over 1500 active volunteers. When she and Frank moved to West Hartford, Connecticut in 1979, Marge had a successful second career as a real estate broker. They retired to Waitsfield, Vermont in 1986. She was very active in the community, helping to found St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church and establishing the Green Mountain Cultural Center, an arts organization which received the Governors’ Award for excellence in the arts. The Shermans relocated to New London, New Hampshire in 2000, where Marge continued her interest in volunteering and community service. She founded a book club at Hilltop Place, was on the Bandstand Committee for the town of New London, and was a member of the Garden Club. Marge is survived by her husband, Frank W Sherman; two sisters, Virginia McDonald from Miami, Fl. and Jean Quinn from Kansas City, Mo.; one brother, John Mering from Tucson, Az.; two daughters, Cathy Jane Sherman of York, Pa. and Margaret Jean Sherman of Old Greenwich, Ct.; and two sons, James Andrew Sherman of Andover, Ma. and Thomas William Sherman of Evanston, Il.; three granddaughters, four grandsons and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by one brother, Ray Delaplane Mering Jr. and one sister, Clara Ruth Taylor. A service in celebration of her life will be held at St. Andrews Episcopal Church at 354 Main Street in Hopkinton, NH on November 10, 2007 at 2 PM.
