Martha Muriel Back Aguiar died on October 19, 2024 in Concord, NH. She was born on January 29, 1948 at Lying-In Hospital in Philadelphia, PA, and raised in Glenside, PA. Her family moved to Darien, CT, when she was in junior high. There, Martha was an avid sailor at the Noroton Yacht Club. In 1968, Martha received her nursing degree from Boston University, where she met Jim Aguiar, her husband of 46 years.
Martha and Jim worked as high school teachers in Biddeford, ME, and then she earned her MSN at the University of Oregon. Their elder daughter was born in Eugene. The small family moved to New Hampshire where Jim worked at Plymouth State College and their younger daughter was born. Martha taught Lamaze classes and worked as an elementary school nurse in Campton and Thornton.
Martha climbed all of New Hampshire's 4,000 footers and planned outdoor adventures with friends and family. Yearly trips to Hermit Island with the Whites and an epic Grand Canyon adventure are cherished memories.
When the family spent two years in Moorhead, MN, she was a professor of nursing at Concordia College. She finished her career in Ithaca, NY, as a school nurse-teacher and a high school health educator.
In 2003, Martha and Jim moved back to their beloved Campton. She volunteered with the Appalachian Mountain Club, kayaked with friends, visited the coast of Maine, and traveled to every continent with Jim. She served on the zoning board, library committee, and volunteered with the Campton Historical Society.
Martha was a quilter, chocolate chip cookie baker, and strawberry jam maker. She loved her grandchildren with her whole heart and was always there to cheer them on.
She is preceded in death by her parents Robert and Muriel Back, husband Jim and grandson Jasper Aguiar Allred. She is survived by her children Gretchen Aguiar (Jeff Allred) and Jessica Mack (Shane) and her grandchildren Seamus, Hattie, Henry, Hazel and Beatrice; siblings Ann (Larry), Rob (Janet), and Tim (Cheryl); and beloved nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews. She also leaves behind her partner, Steve Howell, who filled her last years with companionship, travel, and love. Her loving group of friends will miss Martha dearly.
