Martha Jones

Martha Gammons Jones passed away peacefully at home on March 21, 2025, at the age of 71.

Martha was born and raised in Wakefield, Massachusetts. She attended the University of New Hampshire, earning a bachelor’s degree in Animal Science. She lived briefly in Chicago where she worked at the Brookfield Zoo. A New Englander at heart, she returned to Boston where she met Roy Jones while they both worked at Angell Memorial Animal Hospital. They married in 1980 and had two children. She moved to New Hampshire in 1995, living in North Hampton and most recently in Dover.

With her indelible humor and nurturing spirit, Martha cultivated a wide circle of friends and built meaningful community. She was a steadfast friend, trusted confidante, and unwavering support. She shared laughter and joy in all she did. Her kind, caring, and generous nature was evident in her varied work as a veterinary nurse, caregiver, library assistant, and manager at Meals on Wheels.

She was an avid reader, crafter, and birdwatcher, but her greatest passion was gardening. She was happiest barefoot, working her incomparable gardens wherever she sowed them. Her garden in Dover is especially magnificent where she kept over 50 varieties of bulbs.

For her, no home was complete without animals; over the years many rescued cats and dogs were part of her family. Most recently, Edgar the cat and Catalina the dog were her devoted companions. Her love of animals shone in her volunteer work. She devoted her time to Seacoast Area Feline Education & Rescue (SAFER) feeding feral cat colonies and FuRRR, a local cat rescue where she found a strong sense of community with fellow cat lovers.

Martha enjoyed traveling. In her twenties, she backpacked through Ireland with her close friend Ali Collins. Her later travels included Nova Scotia, Scotland, and a return to Ireland. She spent time in the Adirondacks, Illinois, California, and Oregon visiting family.

She leaves behind her best friend and husband of 46 years, Roy; her daughters, Cally and Remi Jones, and their partners; her nephews and nieces as well as their children, some of whom called her “Gammy.” She will be remembered by her many dear friends gathered over her life.

She will be deeply missed by all.
