Martha B. Lyon

Martha B. Lyon, 86, of 30 Lakeside Road, New London died on February 13, 2001 at the Clough Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Lyon was born on July 27, 1914 in Manchester, NH the daughter of the late Harrison and Winifred (Whitcomb) Burns. She graduated from UNH in 1935 and married the late Albert M. Lyon in 1936. Mrs. Lyon received her Master's Degree in Library Science from Pratt Institute in New York City. She worked at the New York Public Library from 1936 until 1940 and then moved to Franklin Square, NY. She was a volunteer ambulance driver during World War II out of New York. She moved to Wilton, Connecticut in 1949 where she raised her children. She was a Cub Scout Den Leader and was active in the Girl Scouts for 20 years, earning the highest adult volunteer award. She was the librarian for Comstock Elementary School in Wilton and moved to Hancock, NH in 1969. She was a bank officer at the Peterborough Savings Bank and was in charge of student loans until her retirement in 1984. She then became an office manager for an orthodontist office in Peterborough. Mrs. Lyon moved to New London in 1995. She was an enthusiastic member of the Hogan Sports Center of Colby-Sawyer College. Family members include; two sons, Kenneth A. Lyon of Grenwich, CT and Douglas W. Lyon of New London; two daughters, Barbara W. Donohue of Severna Park,MD and Laurie B. Lyon of Nashua;and three grandchildren. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hogan Sports Center, Colby-Sawyer College, 100 Main Street, New London, NH 03257
