Mary Maxwell Chagnon, 91, died on 19 February, 2020 at Havenwood-Heritage Heights Retirement Community in Concord, NH, having lived a long and full life.
She was born in Henniker, NH on March 1, 1928, the daughter of Diamond A. and Ruth (Cooper) Maxwell. She previously lived in Henniker, NH; Salem, MA; and Antrim NH.
Mrs. Chagnon was educated in Henniker, NH schools and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1949 with a B.S. in biology. She worked as a medical technologist at Beverly Hospital, Beverly, MA, for three years before marrying and taking time to be a stay-at-home mother. When her children grew older, she worked as a substitute teacher in the Salem, MA public school system, earned her M.S. in education from Antioch University in 1978, and became a full-time science teacher for Salem Middle School, working there until her retirement in 1993.
Mrs. Chagnon is survived by daughter, Ellen Chagnon (Edward Boiteau) of Mountain Home, AR; son, Thomas Chagnon (Cynthia) of Bow, NH; her two sisters, Jean Harford of Freeport, ME and Janice Mellen of Vancouver, WA; her brother, Robert Maxwell (Judy) of Missoula, MT; and son-in-law, David Sandberg of Coeur d'Alene, ID. Mrs. Chagnon also is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Katie Boiteau (Rick Langley), Sylvie Stacy (Scott), Jeffrey Chagnon (Alison), Steven Chagnon (Mariah Cahill), and Brian Chagnon, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Roger Chagnon, to whom she was married for 50 years; daughter, Karen Chagnon; and dear friend, Thomas Rhamlow, Sr.
ARRANGEMENTS: To protect the health and safety of family and friends, a Memorial Service will be announced in the coming months. Burial will be at Henniker New Cemetery in Henniker, NH.
