Mary Michelson Haselton, 84, a retired Foreign Service Officer and accomplished artist, died August 27, 2004, at her home in Hanover. She was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on May 15, 1920, the daughter of Michael and Jeannette (MacFarlane) Michelson. In 1941, she began a career in Washington DC which culminated in her appointment to the Foreign Service in 1960. She served as Vice Consul in Zurich, Switzerland, and Munich, Germany, until her marriage to George Haselton, also a Foreign Service Officer, required her to retire in 1964. She rejoined the Foreign Service in 1974 and served in several State Department positions before being appointed deputy principal officer and chargé daffaires in Fiji. Mr. Haselton died in Virginia Beach, VA in 1995. Mr. and Mrs. Haselton also taught international relations at Simons Rock College in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and American Studies at St. Antonys College, Oxford University, England. After studying at Washburn University, Topeka, Kansas; the University of Texas, Austin, Texas; and American University in Washington, DC, Mrs. Haselton earned her ALB degree cum laude at Harvard University at the age of 81. Painting was Mrs. Haseltons avocation and her award-winning works of art were shown in numerous exhibitions, including the Regional Exhibitions at the Hood Museum, Dartmouth College. Mrs. Haselton was a resident of Hanover from 1972 until 1986, and returned to Hanover in 2001. She is survived by one brother, Calvin Michelson, of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. Rosalie Brooks and Mrs. Rosella Hupp, both of Topeka, Kansas; and her stepdaughter, Roxanne Summers, of Mattoon, Illinois.
