WOLFEBORO - Mrs. Mary Mitchell Maxwell, 94, of Gilmanton Rd, Barnstead, died at SunBridge of Wolfeboro, peacefully and surrounded by loved ones, on Thursday, Feb 6, 2003. Born February 22, 1908 in Somerville, MA, she was the daughter of Alexander H. and Marian Hall Mitchell who ran the former Mitchell School in Billerica, MA. She graduated from Wheaton College, class of 1928 majoring in Botany, a passion that she retained for life. She lived with her family in Belmont, MA during her husband's 29 year tenure as a mathematics professor at Belmont Hill School, retiring with him to their summer home in Barnstead in 1972, where she resided until her death. She maintained an active interest in conservation activities throughout her life. She served as President of the Belmont, MA and Alton Garden Clubs and later as President of the New Hampshire Federation of State Garden Clubs. She was a life member of the National Council of State Garden Clubs. Mrs. Maxwell was predeceased by her beloved husband, Maynard W. Maxwell, who died in 1977. She is survived by her son, Maynard C. Maxwell of Middlebury, CT and his two children, Scott and Michelle Maxwell as well as many caring friends and neighbors. At her request, there will be no calling hours. Burial will be in the spring at the family lot, Chadwick Hill Cemetery, China, Maine. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in her name may be made to the Nature Conservancy of NH, 22 Ridge Street, 4th Floor, Concord, NH 03301.
