Mary Wilson Weist

Mary Wilson Weist, 83, passed away peacefully on October 12, 2023, at Covenant Living of Keene, NH.

Born on April 29, 1940 in Gloversville, NY to George and Doris Wilson (née Saltsman), it became clear at an early age that Mary was a natural caregiver.  Starting as a mother’s helper in elementary school, she grew to become a trusted babysitter to many Johnstown families as a teenager, spending most, if not all, of her free time caring for children.

After graduating from Johnstown High School in 1958, Mary then enrolled at the Albany Medical Center School of Nursing where she achieved her Diploma in Nursing in the fall of 1961.  She subsequently worked as a registered nurse for several years at Albany Medical Center (AMC), St. Mary's Hospital in Amsterdam, NY and later as a county social services case worker.  Mary often commented that the highlight of her nursing career was caring for neonatal patients at a new specialized unit which was the foundation of the current AMC Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

After marrying the love of her life Andy in 1967, Mary left nursing to care for her cherished family and maintain an immaculate home.  She treasured her life-long friendships established in childhood, high school, and nursing school, as well as her wonderful neighbors in Glenville, NY.

Mary is survived by her daughters and sons in law Nancy and Stephen Brooks of West Chesterfield, NH and Martha and Chris Murray of Annandale, VA, grandchildren Andrew and Matthew Brooks and Meghan and Paige Murray, and brother William Wilson of Rockwall, TX.

A graveside service and interment will be in December, date to be determined.  Mary will be interred at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY alongside her beloved husband Andrew who predeceased her in 1999.

Friends wishing to honor Mary’s love and affinity for children and caregiving are invited to donate in her name to the Ronald McDonald House Charities online at rmhcnc.org or via mail at Ronald McDonald House Charities, Inc., 26345 Network Place, Chicago, IL 60673.
