Merton Earle Church

Merton E. Church, died Friday, September 3, 2010 at the New Hampshire Veterans Home in Tilton, NH. He was born on April 3, 1920 in Hickory, PA.

Mr. Church resided in Highland Falls, NY with his wife of 49 years, Mary Ellen (O’Dell) Church. In 1995, he moved to Sunapee, NH to be near his step-daughter Dona Chiarella and her family.

Mr. Church served in the United States Army from 1942 – 1949. He later became the Chief of Police for Highland Falls, NY.

He was an active member of the Masons in Highland Falls and later in NH. Cars, motorcycles and children always brought a smile to his face. He loved music, fresh picked berries and the family dogs.

Mr. Church was predeceased by his wife Mary, and is survived by his stepdaughter: Dona (O’Dell) Chiarella and her husband John of Sunapee, NH; four grandchildren and their families, including four great grand children and one great great grandson, his sister in law: Maude (O’Dell) Bates in NY, her two sons and their families, as well as several siblings and their families.

Mr. Church will be interned at the Cedars Cemetery in Newburgh, NY. There are no services scheduled for NH at this time.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his name to the NHVH Residents Fund, 139 Winter Street, Tilton, NH 03276.
