Michael Antonio Capobianco, 100, of Boscawen passed away at home, surrounded by family, Monday, April 4, 2016.
Michael was born in Concord on March 5, 1916 to Italian immigrant parents, Raphaelo Capobianco and Theresa (Giannino) (Capobianco) Roberts. He was a lifelong resident of the Concord/Boscawen area, attending Concord High School.
Michael joined the Home Guard in the early 1930s at the age of 16 and enlisted to active duty in the Army on December 4, 1942. He left New York City aboard the Mauritania for Liverpool, England, on March 31, 1944, arriving on April 8, 1944. Michael landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France on June 18, 1944, twelve days after D-Day. He was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. He fought in Germany, France, Luxembourg and Belgium. He was one of the few American Units to cross the Elbe River in Germany. His unit also met the Russians twice. His unit received five campaign stars and was decorated by Belgium twice and France once as well as the Presidential Citation. Michael returned home in October, 1945, aboard the Queen Mary. He left Liverpool and in four days arrived in New York. After the war, Michael worked at Harris Emery Woolen Mill as a shipper, then as a carpenter until 1951 and then to Lincoln Furniture Company for a couple of years. He then worked as a technician for the National Guard, holding this position for 30 years until he retired at the age of 60. He retired as First Sargent after 34 years of duty.
Michael is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Lucina (Duquette) Capobianco. He is survived by his daughters, Gail Dragon and husband, Richard, Annette Case and husband, David and Toni Marshall and husband, Walter Jr.; his companion, Bernice LaPorte; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will greet visitors Monday, April 11, 2016 10:00am-11:00am at Immaculate Conception Church, 9 Bonney Street in Penacook. A Funeral Mass will begin at 11:00am. Burial will take place at 2:00pm at Calvary Cemetery on Village Street in Penacook.
