Michael D. Weeks

Michael David Weeks, 58, of Wilton, passed away peacefully on December 8, 2019, at Bedford Hills Center, Bedford, with his beloved friends by his side.

Born in Tarrytown, NY, he is the son of Rouland L. Weeks, Jr. Raised and educated in Peekskill, NY, Michael was an honor student at Hendrick Hudson High School, Class of 1979. Following high school, he matriculated to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, earning his Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science in 1983. Michael enjoyed a lifetime career as a software engineer at a variety of companies including Pratt and Whitney, Cabletron, and Acacia Networks. In the latter part of his career, Michael was self-employed as a Contract Software Engineer specializing in software development for telecommunications and networking companies.

With great sadness, we say farewell to a Renaissance man. In case you're not sure what a Renaissance man is - "A very clever person who was good at many different things." Look in the dictionary and you will find a picture of Michael - it's true. Michael had talent and knowledge in an endless array of subjects. Although Michael would fondly say that his Dad was the true Renaissance man, and that Michael followed in his footsteps. Always fun at social gatherings, he could talk to you about any topic with an amazing depth of knowledge, from quantum physics to Monty Python (or Mr. Bean or The 3 Stooges, of course).

From a very young age, Michael had shown a keen interest in understanding how things work. Michael earned his Eagle Scout badge at the age of 15 for designing harnesses for seeing eye dogs. This insatiable desire for "how things work" paved the way for developing abilities which truly made him a jack of all trades. He was a perfectionist. He was brilliant, literally a genius, and the hundreds of projects throughout his years spoke to this. Most recently, Michael engineered the construction of a music studio – paying attention to every detail. After it was completed, the sound proofing was a master minded feat of engineering. (BTW-He once built a replica of 'the robot" from "Lost in Space" in his spare time.)

Then the other side of Michael. The guy who knew every single "Tom and Jerry" episode – and would roar laughing every time he watched them. Michael loved the outdoors and all God's creatures. He found a type of friendship with the animals that made their way onto his land, a beautiful piece of property with a great brook running alongside his home. Michael was sure to feed his birds and he maintained they would let him know when their feeders were empty. He had the same family of cardinals for years. In his final days he told us to watch for the cardinals – because that's where we would find him. Michael loved to take long hikes at night with friends when the moon was full. He would find excitement in the hoot of an old owl, or the swoosh of a flying squirrel. Other times you would find Michael hiking with his best friend Joseph, a Great Pyrenees, a faithful companion who Michael adored. While Michael was tinkering in his workshop, "JoJo" would help by inspecting every tool before he would allow Michael to use it. Michael found great joy in the simple things in life; building a fire and watching the flames, star gazing and looking for comets, (yes, he knew every constellation) or hunting for 4 leaf clovers. He loved to share his joy and excitement for life with everyone. Michael was always the helping hand. You could always rely on him to show up and chip in. He lived in the solution, cracking jokes along the way. Even in illness you would find his engineering mind calculating how he was going to navigate and maneuver his way through the new circumstances his disease brought him. Even with Michael's terminal diagnosis, you'd find him tackling his cancer with a grace under fire. It was an inspiration to watch him continue to glean every bit of goodness he could out of life every single day - which started with watching the sunrise.

Michael was also an eclectic collector; from antique phones to model trains, vintage phonographs, stamps and coins. Walking through Michael's house was like going to a fun museum, complete with a deep-sea diving helmet and a barber shop chair – classic pinball machines, traffic lights, old phone booths – a little Smithsonian right in his small town of Wilton that he loved.

Michael won the hearts of many as he made his way through life. Michael kept a watchful eye on everyone close to him. He cared deeply about his Dad and his sisters and their children. He was a great son, brother, uncle and friend. If you were lucky enough to be family or a friend of Michael's, then you were lucky enough. We loved him with every beat of our hearts and always will.

Michael is survived by his father, Rouland L. Weeks, Jr of Cairo, NY; sister, Rhonda McInerney and her husband Dan, and their two daughters, Kaydi and Caryn, all of Garrison, NY; sister, Natalie Mayer and her daughter Valerie of Galloway, OH; dear friends, MaryBeth McPherson of Amherst, NH and Kevin Naughton of Goffstown, NH; and extended family and friends. Michael was predeceased by his grandparents, Rouland L. Weeks, Sr. and Amelia Weeks.
