Mimi Denton Bravar, aged 84, died peacefully on January 29, 2018, after a brief hospitalization for a stroke. She was surrounded by her sister, two daughters and five grandchildren. Mimi was a beloved mother, grandmother, teacher and mentor, revered by hundreds of students on whose lives she left an indelible impression for decades.
Mimi was born March 16, 1933, in Binghamton, NY. and was identified as a musical prodigy at an early age. She studied at the Eastman School of Music, Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood, MA, graduated with a B.S. from Juilliard School of Music in 1954 and completed her doctoral work at Boston University. Mimi received her M.M. in Music from Boston University in 1958.
In addition to music, Mimi had many other passions:
• Gardening and watching the birds flock to her feeders on the deck
• Rescuing stranded animals
• Having friends gather to play chamber music and cook gourmet meals
• Baking life-sized birthday cakes for her grandchildren in the shapes of cellos and alligators
• Baking with her granddaughter
• Attending her grandchildren's concerts, hockey games, ski races, swim meets and horseback competitions
Mimi served for many years as violist and pianist with the Buffalo Philharmonic under Josef Krips, and was principal violist with the Vermont Symphony and many other orchestras in the New England area. She performed throughout the United States as a member of the Windsor String Quarter and various other ensembles.
Mimi taught at the University of Buffalo, the Longy School of Music, the University of Massachusetts at Lowell, St. Anselm's College, Phillips Andover and Phillips Exeter Academy. She served on the NH State Arts Council and on the National Endowment for the Arts. Mimi retired as Director of Music at Phillips Exeter Academy in 1995, where she received the Founder's Day Award for exceptional service to the Academy and the Brown Award for Outstanding Teaching. She also received Chamber Music America's award for Excellence in Chamber Music Teaching. Mimi served as the Resident Artist for Viola at the University of New Hampshire from 2000-2013. She continued her private teaching up until her death.
