Muriel Ashley West

Muriel Ashley West, 86, of Hudson, New Hampshire died on August 7, 2002 at Greenbriar Terrace Healthcare in Nashua after a lengthy illness. She was born April 8, 1916 in New Port News, Virginia. She is the daughter of the late Joe M.H. Ashley, former Sheriff of Anderson County, South Carolina, and Mina (Darby) Ashley. She is the granddaughter of Joshua Ashley, former 27-year member of the State House of Representatives of South Carolina. Mrs. West was appointed by act of the Anderson County Delegation to the South Carolina Legislature to the position of Assistant County Youth Counselor for Anderson County, SC. She was later appointed County Youth Counselor. In 1957, she was deputized as the first woman deputy sheriff for Anderson County, SC. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, an assistant basketball coach for the Abney Mill Girls' Basketball team, and, with help from the Masonic Order and volunteers, organized the teenage club in Belton, SC. She was active in the Orrville Baptist Church in Anderson, SC and a member of the Eastern Star. She was an accomplished organist for both her church and the Eastern Star. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, C. Jo Robertson and J. Michael Robertson, of Hudson, NH and Kiawah Island, SC, three grandsons, two granddaughters, one great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of sixty-one years, Edward M. West Sr. and her son Edward M. West Jr. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 13, 2002 at 11:00 AM at the Alvirne Chapel, 160 Derry Road, Route 102, Hudson, NH. Internment services will handled by the Cox Funeral Home of Belton, South Carolina. Internment will on September 10, 2002, at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Anderson, South Carolina.
