Nathaniel Meigs Stout, 72, died at home on March 15, with his wife by his side. His life was full of love, challenges, and fun. He leaves his beloved wife of 41 years, Sharon Price Stout, his children, Meg and Titus, their spouses, siblings, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. He is pre-deceased by his parents, Florence Andrews Soule and Ferris Meigs Stout.
Stout was a veteran of the United State Marine Corps, having served four years in electronics and communications and was honorably discharged as a Sergeant. He was a victim of cancer believed to have been caused by water contamination at the Marine Corps base, Camp Lejeune. He’d been stationed at Camp Lejeune for 20 non-consecutive months.
Born in Oberlin, OH, Stout was raised in the Berkshire Mountains of New York. He experienced the old legend, awakening before school to feed the livestock; his parents were enamored at the time with country life; that love wore off on Nat.
A baby boomer, growing up in the 1960s, Stout experienced the national trauma of the death of his leaders, the hopelessness of colonial war, the sorrow spread by dishonest leaders and urban, racial warfare. Always a lover of history, Stout also had a political bent, and served his community with the devotion he showed his nation.
Among many community activities, Stout was Senior Warden of St. James Episcopal Church at the time he became ill. He was a regular parish member for nearly 40 years. He is a former Keene city councilor of ten years and served on many community boards including the Keene Library Board of Trustees, the Keene Planning Board, the Keene Zoning Board of Adjustment, and the non-profit Keene Family YMCA.
Stout left his studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1973 and joined the Marines. With help from the GI Bill, he returned to college and graduated in 1980. Stout graduated from Tabor Academy in 1971 and from Outward Bound Hurricane Island survival school in 1968.
A newspaper reporter early in his career – including at The Keene Sentinel -- Stout’s career took several turns. His work included director of publications and public relations and communications director for three non-profits: The Brattleboro Retreat, Vermont Academy and the NH Automobile Dealers Association. Stout was very active in publishing as well, having worked at a book publishing house, where he introduced desktop publishing technology, and in magazine production. He taught computer technology, specifically desktop publishing, for five years at Community College of Vermont
Prior to the onset of his recent illness, Stout was actively employed as office manager at the Monadnock Conservancy.
