Patricia M Campbell

It is in dying that we are born to eternal life -St. Francis of Assisi

Patricia Moorman Miller Campbell was born September 22, 1934 to Bruce DeHaven Miller Sr. and Elizabeth Moorman Hook Miller in Louisville, KY and was born to eternal life on April 2, 2025 at Riverwoods in Durham, NH.

Pat is survived by daughters Anne DeHaven Campbell Williamson of Portsmouth, NH and Catherine Bruce Campbell Okhuysen of Portsmouth, NH; grandchildren, Nathanael, Richard (Jenna), Savita and James; great grandchildren, Ada, Cora and Iris Patricia; her sister Katherine Haynes Miller Solomon and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, brother Bruce DeHaven Miller Jr, and sister Elizabeth Girdler Miller Bernstrom.

As Pat grew up in the city of Audubon Park, she attended Prestonia Elementary School, Highland Junior High and Atherton High School graduating in 1952. An avid swimmer of many pools, rivers and lakes, she was particularly proud of completing a race across the Ohio River which awarded her a certificate as an Exalted Mermaid of the Ohio River.

In addition to attending Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana she received a bachelor degree from the University of Kentucky. In 1956, Pat married Frederick Campbell and they moved to Michigan where Anne and Catherine grew up in Plymouth and Grosse Ile. Following their divorce she returned to Louisville.

After working in the family marine hardware business and a small printing press on Grosse Ile, Pat worked for several years at Nationwide Insurance in Downriver Michigan. In 1979, she began working for the American Printing House for the Blind in Louisville and retired as the Director of Development and Related Services in 1998. Always one to keep busy, Pat started RiverCity Workshoppe, a miniatures business. After moving to Newmarket, NH, she also worked in the Office of Diversity at the University of New Hampshire and assisted at Ballet New England. When she moved to Portsmouth, Pat joined the Portsmouth Public Library staff as a page in the Youth Department shelving books and then later mending and repairing books. After leaving the Library, she continued to mend and repair books for friends and organizations including St. John’s Episcopal Church and the Riverwoods Library.

Pat was active in Episcopalian churches during her adult life in Michigan and New Hampshire. A faithful 8 AM attendee, she attended services in person or online at both St. George’s Episcopal Church in Durham and St John’s Episcopal Church in Portsmouth.

A member of the DAR for almost 65 years, family history and archives were a lifelong interest. Pat’s maternal aunt researched the Barr branch of the family outside of Irvington, KY back to the American Revolution and her father had started to gather information on the family in Hardinsburg, KY. This lifelong interest culminated in a grand family reunion Pat organized for her 80th birthday honoring both sides of her family.

Always a supporter of the arts as well, Pat enjoyed the ballet, opera and literature, often attending performances and author events in both Louisville and Portsmouth and particularly loved the Music Hall ‘Live from the Met’ opera series.

Travel before retirement was primarily to visit grandchildren in England, Michigan, Wisconsin and New Hampshire. Each grandchild had a special solo trip with her when they were 10. In later years, trips with family and good friends included the National Parks, Canada, Western Europe and the British Isles. Some of those trips were dedicated to riding carousels and looking for moose.

A summer service at the St John’s Memorial Garden is planned. Memorial gifts can be made to: American Printing House for the Blind, 1839 Frankfort Avenue Louisville KY 40206, www.aph.org, The Episcopal Relief & Development, PO Box 5121, Boone, IA 50950 – 0121 www.episcopalrelief.org or a charity of one's choice.
