Paul Van Ells, 77, of Enfield died suddenly on Wednesday, June 23, 2004 after a brief illness. Mr. Van Ells was born on August 19, 1926 in Kaukauna, Wisconsin the son of the late Dr. Raymond and Enola (Van Leishout) Van Ells. After graduating from Mishicot High School at the age of 17, Mr. Van Ells enlisted in the United States Marine Corps with the permission of his father. During World War II he served in the South Pacific on the islands of Iwo Jima and Peleliu. He was proud of his service to his country and recently returned from the dedication of the World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C. with fellow veterans from the Post # 22. Mr. Van Ells was an active member of American Legion Post # 22, a third degree member of the Mascoma Odd Fellows #20, and the Windsor Elks. He was also a proud member of the Marine Corp League of New Hampshire. Once a month he cooked for the Enfield Community Dinners and every Thursday he drove cars for Herb Gray’s Auto Auctions, which he enjoyed so much. For many years he and his wife, Margaret lived in Thetford Hill, Vermont and spent their summer months at their cottage on Lake Morey. In 1999 they moved to The Landing on Lake Mascoma in Enfield. Prior to returning to the Upper Valley Mr. Van Ells worked for Honeywell Corporation, in Florida, where he was a master machinist working in the guidance division of the space program. There he was a member of the Minring Club. He enjoyed boating, fishing and swimming activities and loved the outdoors. In recent years he enjoyed visiting his brothers in Wisconsin and fishing in the Great Lakes. Paul loved being with his family, friends and neighbors. He leaves four daughters, Carol Ahern of Hanover, Patricia Fields of Piermont, Susan Van Ells of Enfield, Margaret Barnes of Grafton and eight grandchildren. He is predeceased by his wife of 53 years, Margaret who died August 2003, a brother Raymond, his mother and father Doc & Enola Van Ells and a grandson Edward M. Barnes. He leaves five brothers David, John, and Joe of Wisconsin, James of Georgia and Thomas of Florida. A Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Helena’s Catholic Church in Enfield on Saturday, June 26th at 10am. At the request of Mr. Paul Van Ells there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Mascoma Odd Fellows #20, Post Office Box 605, Lebanon, New Hampshire 03766.
