Pauline S. Moriglioni

Pauline S. Moriglioni reluctantly, but peacefully brought the "Pollycoaster" to a stop on Wednesday, March 23. She was at home on Stark Hill Road in West Canaan barely more than ¼ mile from the place of her birth on Nov 9, 1927.

Polly was born and raised "on the hill" next door to cousins who were as close as siblings... genetically as well as in terms of physical distance since their mothers were sisters and their fathers were brothers. She was the only daughter of four children (including Clayton, Stanley and Roger) born to Walter E. and Reine K. (Mooney) Stark. She also grew up in the company of her four cousins (Estelle, Burton, Carroll and Shirley) who lived next door in the Wells homestead where their mothers had been born. There were many more relatives nearby from the extended Mooney family and the Stark family. who were from Lyme, NH.

Polly attended her first 8 years of school in West Canaan at a two-room school house (now, the 4H Clubhouse on Rte. 4) and graduated from Canaan High School in 1945. She worked at the telephone company in Enfield NH and saved enough to buy her first vehicle: an Indian motorcycle. She thoroughly enjoyed the freedom she felt when riding in the open air and spent many happy days on the roads. It was in that setting that she met Sylvio R. ("Fat") Boivin and they shared a love for Indian motorcycles and eventually, their children and grandchildren for 37 years. Fat died in 1989 after she devotedly cared for him through his illness.

Her older brothers enlisted during WWII. Stan was a Marine and died during the war. Polly and Stan had been close as the two middle children. Near the end of 1949, she enlisted and after her tour was extended due to the Korean conflict, spent "3 years, 3 months and 17 days" in the service. She and Fat married in 1953 and she devoted the next decades to raising Walter John, Cecilia Sylvia ("Dee") and Philip Stanley. When Phil was in junior high school, she went to work part time in the school cafeteria. There, she shared as many laughs as hours with Thelma, Ann and their boss, Mary Hazen.

In addition to caring for Fat, she also helped to care for her father and then her mother as they aged and spent time helping with the grandchildren. When Fat became unable to work, she went to work at Split Ball Bearing (now Timken Aerospace). She took a

leave during the last months of Fat's illness and, after his death in April 1989, returned to work at SBB until retiring in 1992.

She met John Moriglioni when accompanying a friend to dances in Ludlow, VT. When he asked her to dance, their eyeglasses got tangled together. They spent the next nearly two decades enjoying their retirement years. With John's twin brother and his wife, they carried on the tradition of an annual family picnic that included all the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren in the Moriglioni clan. Polly's children and grandchildren were heartily welcomed into the family and the gathering.

Sadly, John developed Alzheimer's disease and Polly cared for him until a fall resulted in eventual nursing home placement. John did not linger and died within six months of his fall. Polly made the move back to West Canaan to live with Dee and next door to Walt on Stark Hill... where she immediately took over the yardwork. She and Dee had different thoughts about who should be cutting grass or brush and shoveling snow, but Polly only gave it up when she was simply unable to do it.

In later years, she found great joy in the dogs in her life as well as her human family. She and Sabrina were kindred spirits. A few years ago, she developed a passion for kayaking through the VA Rec program and said it made her feel free like she did when riding on her Indian. Polly also enjoyed car rides, being outside, yardwork, jigsaw puzzles, word searches, playing solitaire, listening to hymns and watching murder mysteries.

In addition to Fat and John, Polly was predeceased by her son Philip, her parents and brothers Clayton, Stanley, and Roger. Also, many aunts, uncles and cousins including Doris Mooney Stark, Donald Stark, Carroll, Burton, Estelle (Stark) Neily and Shirley (Stark, LaBarre) Mulvaney.

She is survived by her children Walt & Kathy Boivin, Dee Creighton Johnson. Grandchildren Dan & Michelle Creighton, Philip Boivin, Jr & Brandy Billings, Mike Boivin, Lauren & Aaron Miles, Jacquelynn & Travis Audis and Kate & Joshua Onsgard. Great grandchildren: Rowen Boivin, Isabel Pauline Christensen, Everett Christensen, Lilea Boivin, Emerson Christensen, Sylvia Boivin, Ewan Onsgard, Violet Audis and Juniper Onsgard. Her very dear sister-in-law and good friend, Barbara Moriglioni, stepson and daughter-in-law, David & Elaine Moriglioni and many Stark, Boivin and Moriglioni nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

We would like to thank Gene, Katie, Tanner and the Norwich VT Bayada Hospice staff for their compassionate and caring help and management of the "Pollycoaster"; her VA HBPC team including Deb and Tina who had been with her for years and especially Allison who introduced her to kayaking; and Armistead Senior Care, especially Lindsay for making herself available for so many hours of care these last weeks and Jackie, who took the job so that she could help her Gram during the last several years of her life.

A memorial service is being planned for the summer.
