Dr. Pedro Roberto Gerónimo Fernández-Giménez (Dino), born January 7, 1928 in Ciboure, France, died peacefully on April 11, 2012 in his home in New London, New Hampshire. Dino was an engaging conversationalist, eclectic intellectual, poet and artist, speedy hiker, fabulous host, debonair dresser, and lively dancer.
Dino's life was shaped by the political and social events of his era. He left France as a teen to escape the Nazi occupation, Spain as a young adult to avoid the dictatorship, and travelled extensively during the 50's. He immigrated in 1961, but remained loyal to the Spanish monarchy and voted in every Spanish election after Franco's death.
He received his PhD in Public Administration from the University of Madrid and taught Spanish language and literature at Western Reserve University, Ripon College, and MacMurray College, before becoming an academic advisor at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee 1981-1996. Throughout his professional and personal life he was a mentor and advocate for young people, helping them be true to themselves and pursue their dreams.
Wed to Elizabeth Ourusoff in 1962, Dino was a devoted husband and father. He instilled in his children values of kindness, civility, justice, respect for elders, the importance of education, love of beauty, and joy in life's pleasures.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Madeleine Labille Fernández-Giménez and Santiago Fernández-Giménez y Addison, his brother, Santiago Fernández-Giménez, and his sisters, Françoise Fernández-Giménez and Jane Corey, and his wife of 38 years, Elizabeth (Lise) Ourusoff de Fernández-Giménez . He is survived by his children Maria Fernández-Giménez (Devin Odell) of Fort Collins, CO and Santiago (Jaime) Fernández-Giménez (Laurie Sovell) of Saint Paul, MN, and grandchildren, Clara, Joaquin, Leo, and Rubianna.
Fitting memorials to Dino would be to climb a mountain, paint a watercolor, host a party, write a poem, mentor a teen, or reach out to an elder with respect and curiosity.
